Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Allan Houston scored 23 points and the New York Knicks held off a late rally for a 94-86 victory over the Orlando Magic.

New York appeared to have wrapped up the game when Kurt Thomas hit a baseline jumper for a 92-76 lead with 4:56 left. But the Magic answered with a 10-0 spurt, capped by a jumper by Corey Maggette, to cut deficit to 92-86 with 52 seconds to play. The Orlando rookie scored six of his 10 fourth-quarter points during the run.

But Orlando got no closer as two free throws by Larry Johnson clinched the victory for the Knicks, who have won six of their last eight road games.

Van Gundy addressed the Knicks' penchant for blowing big leads and having to scramble at the end of games.

"Yes, this is not new," Van Gundy said. "It's a mental thing, they celebrate prematurely. Up 16 with five minutes to go -- a couple of frivolous possessions and not rebounding. The game is 48 minutes long. When we get a lead, we don't treat it that way. But I'll tell you, this is a heck of a road win."

"We got a little complacent out there," Knicks swingman Latrell Sprewell said. "We acted like the game was over before it actually was. We didn't play well down the stretch. ... We want to finish the game better than we did tonight."

Houston scored 12 points in the first half as New York held a 41-40 halftime lead. He added nine points in the third quarter as the Knicks widened the advantage to 75-64 entering the final period.

Sprewell scored 19 points and Patrick Ewing added 18 for New York, which shot 51 percent (40-of-79) from the floor to overcome a 58-39 beating on the boards.

Darrell Armstrong scored 16 points to lead the Magic, who shot only 35 percent (35-of-99) and have dropped six of their last seven games.

Maggette finished with 14 points and seven rebounds and Chris Gatling added 11 and 10 boards for the Magic, who dropped to 7-9 at home.

"For the most part it was a pretty good effort," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we really rushed offensively. Unforced turnovers killed us. We're not good enough to overcome all those unforced errors.

"New York was on fire in the third quarter," Rivers added. "They ran the same set eight or nine times and scored. When you look at it, they made shots with hands in their faces and that's all you can ask for."
