Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd could not score, take care of the ball or stop Avery Johnson from scoring eight of his 12 points in a pair of third-quarter runs as the Phoenix Suns suffered a 102-83 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, who avoided a three-game losing streak.

Kidd, who had a triple-double against San Antonio on December 21, managed just four points on 2-of-14 shooting. The standout point guard had 13 assists but also committed eight turnovers and could not stop the smaller Johnson when it counted.

Johnson scored four points in an 8-0 burst that turned a seven-point edge into a 68-53 lead with 5:16 left in the third quarter. He tallied four more in a 6-0 spurt that gave San Antonio a 78-58 bulge with 1:11 left in the quarter. The Suns never got within single digits thereafter.

"You pray all day that he (Kidd) has an off night," Johnson said. "You just try to make him make tough shots naturally. He wants to pass the ball, get guys involved and depending on how they're rolling, he'll look for his offense. Tonight, I tried to make him work hard. Terry (Porter) and Antonio (Daniels) did, too. We got some double-teams. So we just tried to give him a few different looks tonight and fortunately tonight, his shot wasn't on."

David Robinson collected 20 of his 24 points in the first half and grabbed nine rebounds while Tim Duncan had 19 and 15 for the Spurs, who moved within one-half game of the Utah Jazz for first place in the Midwest Division.

"We needed this one," Duncan said. "We were due for it. Things weren't bouncing our way and we were anxious to get one to start us rolling. And this was a great game to do it. It was a big game on the road against a very good team."

Clifford Robinson scored 22 points and Tom Gugliotta added 14 in his second game back after suffering a life-threatening seizure on December 23. The Suns have lost five of their last seven games and dropped to 7-11 against Western Conference opponents with their largest margin of defeat this season.

"We know they outworked us, that's the bottom line," Clifford Robinson said. "They did what they had to do to get going in the right direction. This was a tough game. Their second and third shots killed us We can't win consistently doing some of the things we're doing."

Malik Rose had 13 points and seven rebounds and Jaren Jackson contributed 10 and six for the Spurs, who made 25-of-32 free throws and held a 56-46 edge in rebounding. They ruled in the paint, outscoring Phoenix, 46-26.

"They're a very good offensive rebounding team and when we can cut back on that and get the ball out, it cuts down on a lot of their points and when we can get the ball off the boards and run with it, it really affects them," Duncan said. "It really puts them back on their heels."

Randy Livingston scored 12 points off the bench and Luc Longley added 10 and a season-high 10 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 37 percent (33-for-89) from the field. Phoenix is shooting 38 percent in three games against San Antonio this season.

"They (the Spurs) played harder from the beginning of the game," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "They wanted to game more. We were sloppy and that pretty much sums it up.

"Everyone makes a big deal about how we're 12-1 against the East, and that is all well and good, but we need to find a way to win there games. Tonight was specifically a case of them just playing flat-out harder."
