Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks fell apart in the fourth quarter and Hubert Davis and the Dallas Mavericks took advantage of their futility.

Davis hit three consecutive 3-pointers during a decisive run in the final period as the Mavericks ran past the slumping Hawks, snapping a five-game losing streak with a 95-85 victory.

Playing without ailing coach Lenny Wilkens (flu) for the fourth straight game, the Hawks entered the fourth quarter with a 74-68 lead but managed to make just 5-of-26 shots over the final 12 minutes and scored 11 points in the quarter.

Alan Henderson made a layup to give Atlanta a 76-68 lead with 10:04 to play before Davis went from the left corner, the right sideline and back to the left side on Dallas' next three trips, draining a 25-footer each time to forge a 77-77 tie with seven minutes to play.

"I just appreciate the opportunity of being out there," Davis said. "They threw me some good passes and fortunately, they went in. That's a shot I feel comfortable with. I think we were really unselfish tonight. We hit the open man. When you do that, most of the time, the ball goes in. It was nice to get a win tonight."

Michael Finley scored 28 points, including a running jumper in the lane that gave Dallas the lead for good, 79-77, with 6:02 remaining. Shawn Bradley's layup just over a minute later capped the 14-1 run and gave the Mavericks an 82-77 advantage.

Nelson was serving a one-game suspension for bumping referee Scott Wall in his haste to confront Utah forward Karl Malone in the second quarter of Thursday's loss to the Jazz. Nelson's son Donn guided the team tonight, watching the Mavs post their first win of the new millennium.

"I thought (Donn) got us prepared for the game in terms of the scouting report," Davis said. "He coached a good game. I thought he did a great job."

Isaiah Rider scored 24 points and Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 19 rebounds for Atlanta, which has lost six of seven and slipped to 1-3 under assistant coach Stan Albeck. Rider made just 9-of-28 shots, including a 1-of-7 performance during the Hawks' dismal fourth quarter.

"It was a frustrating game tonight from the standpoint of playing good enough to win," Rider said. "We played pretty good the whole game and then pretty much just broke down in the fourth quarter. Everybody went cold."

"I think Stan's done a good job," added Rider, who has had his problems communicating with Wilkens and the rest of the Atlanta front office this season. "But of course you miss a coach like Lenny Wilkens."

Davis finished with 14 points for Dallas, which has won six of the last seven meetings with Atlanta at Reunion Arena.

Jim Jackson scored 18 points and Henderson added 13 for Atlanta, which shot 35 percent (34-of-98) and held a 55-50 advantage on the boards.

"What happened in the fourth period?," Jackson said. "In the third quarter, we had a good flow going. Shot-wise, in the fourth quarter, we missed some dunks, we missed some tip-backs. We didn't make shots. When you miss and they make nine times out of 10, you are going to be down like we were."

"Of course you miss coach, but as a team we still do things with or without him," Jackson added. "We do things right as a team without coach Wilkens as a team, too. We won last night, no reason why we couldn't have won tonight if we had just continued to play like we played in the third quarter."

Cedric Ceballos had 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki added 18 points for Dallas, which shot 42 percent (32-of-77) and yielded just eight points off turnovers.

"It really didn't matter who was coaching us," Nowitzki said. "We came out with some energy. I think the crowd here today was great. The atmosphere was great in the gym. If it's like that every time, we have a great chance to win every game."

Shawn Bradley matched a season high with 10 boards and had a five of the Mavericks' season-high 10 blocked shots.
