Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- This is what the Los Angeles Clippers had in mind when they made Michael Olowokandi the top overall pick in the 1998 draft.

Olowokandi had a career-high 24 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Clippers to a 107-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers, who had their season-high seven-game winning streak snapped.

"I was feeling good and I put making errors behind me because you can't always depend on people backing you up," Olowokandi said. "So I let the game come to me."

"It was a good win. It was very satisfying," said Clippers coach Chris Ford, whose team snapped a four-game losing streak. "A lot of guys played well, but no one better than Michael."

Olowokandi, a 7-foot Nigerian raised in England, played only two college seasons at lightly regarded Pacific before entering the NBA draft. The Clippers took a chance on him, hoping he would develop into an offensive force while providing defense and rebounding.

Somewhat affected by the lockout, he averaged 8.9 points and 7.9 rebounds in 45 games in his rookie season. This season, he was averaging 9.3 points and 7.6 rebounds and had drawn criticism from Clippers leading scorer Maurice Taylor, who implored the youngster to deliver on his promise.

"He was very aggressive and asked for the ball," said Taylor, who scored 23 points. "When he does that we are at our best."

"I'm always happy for guys that step up," Ford said. "He's been under a lot of heat. It's behind him now. It's a very good sign from a young kid."

Olowokandi did just that, making 9-of-12 shots against Pacers 7-4 center Rik Smits. His post presence spread the floor for Tyrone Nesby, who did not start due to a migraine headache but came off the bench to score 23 points, making four 3-pointers.

"I prepared differently, I was more focused and looking more toward taking care of business," Olowokandi said.

That's something the Pacers did not do. They erased an early deficit but quickly fell behind again and never recovered as they lost to the Clippers for the first time in 13 meetings dating to January 5, 1993. Indiana fell to 10-3 against teams from the Western Conference.

"You have to come out and play. We just didn't do that," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "This is not brain surgery. You have to move the basketball, play hard and you'll win games."

Olowokandi began by missing two free throws but had a dunk as the Clippers bolted to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes. Taylor scored 10 points in the first quarter, which ended with Los Angeles holding a 27-20 lead.

"They started the game by taking the ball inside to Olowokandi and that got them off to that 10-0 lead," said Pacers guard Reggie Miller, who scored 16 points on just 6-of-15 shooting.

Indiana opened the second quarter with a 12-0 run and grabbed a 32-27 lead with 8:52 left on a layup by Travis Best, who scored a season-high 20 points. Olowokandi made two free throws and a hook to frame a 20-4 burst that gave Los Angeles the lead for good. Nesby scored nine points in the run.

The Clippers led 58-44 at halftime and Olowokandi had eight points and eight boards in the third quarter, which ended with Los Angeles holding a 79-67 advantage. He opened the fourth quarter with a hook, two free throws and a jumper and another 3-pointer by Nesby pushed the lead to 88-70 with 8:51 to go. The Pacers got no closer than eight points thereafter.

Troy Hudson scored 11 points for the Clippers, who shot 48 percent (42-of-87), held a 41-37 edge on the glass and forced 19 turnovers. Los Angeles won despite just eight points from rookie sensation Lamar Odom, who shot 2-of-11.

Jalen Rose scored 17 points and Smits added 13 for the Pacers, who shot 45 percent (33-of-74), including just 4-of-19 from behind the arc.
