Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Rookie Elton Brand scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, leading the Chicago Bulls to their first three-game winning streak since 1998 with a 96-79 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Brand, the first pick in the 1999 draft, hit 9-of-14 shots and 8-of-9 free throws for the Bulls, who are enjoying their best run since their dynasty days. Their winning streak is their longest since a 13-game binge from March 14-April 7, 1998, the season of their sixth NBA title in eight years.

"We had a lot of individuals playing well tonight," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Our team defense was outstanding. Elton Brand really established himself on the boards tonight. We got to the foul line and didn't turn it over as much."

After a 2-26 start, the Bulls are 3-0 since star forward Toni Kukoc returned from a back injury. They have beaten Boston twice and Washington twice.

"We have really played inspired basketball since the first night Toni came back," Floyd added. "There was a certain frustration level with not being able to put more veterans on the floor at the same time. It's getting easier with Toni and B.J. (Armstrong) now out there directing the offense and making guys get into the right spots."

"Toni makes my job a lot easier, " Brand said. "Having him driving and slashing gives me the opportunity to make some easier shots."

Armstrong left the game in the second quarter after hearing a pop in his left knee and did not return. The guard is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Chicago took a 44-34 lead into halftime, paced by Kukoc and newcomer Matt Maloney, who scored 11 points apiece. Maloney was playing his second game since being signed on Friday.

"Matt Maloney has provided a real lift to the team," Floyd said. "He has a very settling effect on our offense."

"It's been great to get back on the floor and learn a new offense, which I think fits me pretty good," said Maloney, who finished with 16 points. "There were times tonight when I was in the wrong spot but I learned the plays as the game went on."

The Bulls extended their lead to 60-49 on two free throws by Brand with 4:29 remaining in the third quarter. Boston used a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Antoine Walker, to cut the deficit to 60-56 at the 2:24 mark.

Chicago responded with a 7-1 run of its own to take a 67-57 lead into the final quarter. Brand scored 11 points in the period.

The Celtics closed to 68-59 on a basket by Chicago native Walker, but the Bulls slowly increased the lead, which grew to 89-69 on a driving layup by Kukoc at the 3:10 mark. Brand added nine more points in the fourth quarter.

Kukoc had 23 points and eight assists for the Bulls, who swept Washington in a home-and-away series leading up to tonight's triumph. Chicago overcame 22 turnovers by shooting 49 percent (33-of-67) from the floor.

Paul Pierce scored 20 points and Walker added 16 for Boston, which shot 43 percent (29-of-68).

"I feared going into this game more than the Sacramento game last night," Pierce said. "We don't play to our ability against these kind of teams. This has been the story line for us all year. Play well and win two or three games and then have a night like this."

"We didn't play very well in any aspect tonight," Walker said. "We just came out flat and they played well. It's an 82-game season and we're better than what we showed tonight."

Boston rookie Adrian Griffin left the game midway through the second quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return.
