Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells scored a career-high 23 points off the bench and Scottie Pippen made a critical block late in the game, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to an exciting 96-91 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Wells, a second-year guard, had his best NBA game while playing only 23 minutes as the Trail Blazers won for the seventh time in their last eight games.

"(My teammates) sensed that I had a smaller guy on me and I was in a groove," Wells said. "Whenever a guy on our team gets into a groove, we kind of roll with them and let them go until they falter."

"Bonzi is a solid player," Portland reserve guard Greg Anthony said. "He's a big-time scorer. That was his rep coming out and he works hard and continues to improve."

Pippen nearly recorded a triple-double, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds and nine assists. But his biggest play came in the final seconds.

With Portland clinging to a 94-91 lead, Pippen skied to block Rex Chapman's potential tying 3-pointer with 7.4 seconds left. Anthony picked up the loose ball and fed Pippen for an uncontested dunk, accounting for the final margin.

Anthony took over the point guard duties when Damon Stoudamire left the game after hitting his head on the court near the end of the third quarter. Stoudamire returned to the bench but not to the game.

Phoenix took an 89-88 lead with 1:51 remaining on two free throws by Todd Day, who scored 11 of his 15 points in the final quarter. Wells put Portland ahead 90-89 with an uncontested layup at 1:40 but Chapman answered with a 20-foot jumper from the left sideline, giving the Suns their last lead with 1:14 left.

After a turnover by Day, Brian Grant had an uncontested dunk at 31 seconds and two free throws by Detlef Schrempf 16 seconds later set up the game-saving play.

Chapman scored 20 points for the Suns, who shot 41 percent (36-of-88) from the floor and committed only 12 turnovers.

"We controlled most of the game, but they turned it up in the second half," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "We just couldn't defend Bonzi Wells. He made some big plays around the basket and it hurt us."

"The last five minutes of the game, we didn't play defense and didn't execute on offense," said Tom Gugliotta, who played his third game since recovering from a life-threatening seizure on December 17 after a win in Portland.

The game was tied 20-20 after one quarter. Phoenix jumped to a 47-35 halftime lead, paced by seven second-quarter points from Luc Longley. Grant scored 10 points in the third quarter as Portland cut the deficit to 68-65 entering the final period.

Jason Kidd had 13 points and 14 assists for Phoenix, which has lost six of its last eight and fell to 7-12 against Western Conference teams.

Grant had season highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds for Portland, which shot 48 percent (34-of-71) and outrebounded Phoenix, 47-36.

Portland center Arvydas Sabonis had the flu and did not play.
