Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Brevin Knight hit crucial free throws down the stretch as the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied in fourth quarter to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers, 111-106.

Knight, who dished out 14 assists, hit seven foul shots in the final 2:16 for the Cavaliers, who erased an eight-point deficit early in the fourth quarter en route to their third straight victory.

With Los Angeles leading 87-79 with 10:59 remaining, Cleveland used an 11-2 run, capped by a dunk by Cedric Henderson, to take a 90-89 lead at the 8:14 mark.

Derek Anderson, who scored 29 points against his former team, tied the score at 98-98 with long jumper with 2:39 remaining. The guard was traded by Cleveland in the offseason for Lamond Murray and Johnny Newman.

"I was glad to see those guys," Anderson said. "I wish we had won, though.

"We're the youngest team in the league," Anderson added. "You're going to have mistakes when you close games like tonight. Some of them you win, so it's going to be an up-and-down season.

Knight hit two free throws to give the Cavaliers a 102-98 lead with 2:16 left. Tyrone Nesby pulled Los Angeles within two points with two free throws but Knight added two more to give Cleveland a 104-100 lead at the 1:50 mark.

A driving layup by Troy Hudson moved the Clippers within a point but Knight, who scored 11 points, responded with two clutch free throws with 14.1 seconds remaining. Bobby Sura sealed the win with two more foul shots.

Cleveland led 27-18 after one quarter. Rookie Lamar Odom scored 13 points in the second period to cut the deficit to 49-47 at halftime. Los Angeles was able to stay close by hitting 7-of-11 from 3-point range, despite shooting only 34 percent from the field.

Anderson scored 15 third-quarter points and the Clippers hit 14-of-19 shots to take an 85-77 lead into the final quarter.

Rookie guard Andre Miller provided a big lift off the bench for the Cavs, scoring 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting along with six rebounds and four assists in 26 minutes.

"I was trying to be aggressive off the pick-and-rolls and trying to keep the tempo going fast even though they were making their shots, Miller said. "We picked it up defensively in the fourth quarter."

"We were able to use him on pick-and-rolls and get him in the paint," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "I think he got three of four layups in a row to get us going. Andre came in and did a little bit of everyting. He was a big boost tonight."

Sura and former Clipper Murray scored 20 points apiece for Cleveland, which shot 48 percent (39-of-82) from the floor and outrebounded Los Angeles, 45-32.

"It really wasn't a personal thing," said Murrray, referring to facing his former team. "I didn't go at them individually or 1-on-1. I think that would have hurt our team more than anything."

Shawn Kemp, who sprained his right foot in Cleveland's victory over New York on Saturday, scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The veteran forward fouled out late in the contest.

Odom scored 28 points before fouling out midway through the final quarter. Nesby added 15 points for the Clippers, who shot 43 percent (34-of-80) but hit 10-of-18 from behind the arc.

"We gave up easy post position and penetration and they scored 56 points in the paint," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "That's a lot of points."
