Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant scored 17 of his 30 points in a dominating first-quarter performance as the Los Angeles Lakers coasted to their league-high 15th straight victory, 130-95 over the Denver Nuggets.

The Lakers controlled the game from the start and set season highs for points and victory margin. Los Angeles is one win shy of the second-longest winning streak in franchise history, etsablished in the 1990-91 season, the last time the Lakers reached the NBA Finals.

Bryant scored 14 points as part of a 36-13 opening-quarter run for Los Angeles, which owns the best record in the NBA at 30-5. The Lakers led 43-18 at the end of the period and were never challenged thereafter.

The Lakers' young star was asked whether the presence of Michael Jordan, who attended the game, had an effect on his performance.

"Nope," Bryant said. "It just so happens I have some big games when he's here. He should start showing up more often."

Los Angeles took a 72-47 halftime lead as Bryant scored the last seven points of the second period on two emphatic dunks and a 34-footer just before the buzzer.

"Kobe was unbelievable," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "It was just impossible for us to stop him. I mean when he shoOts a jump shot from half-court and it goes in, you just know it's his night. When he's playing like that, there's not a lot you can do to stop him."

"Kobe was a spark all night," Laker forward A.C. Green said. "He did a great job of being active, scoring and getting people involved."

Shaquille O'Neal scored 17 of his 31 points in the third period to build the lead to 107-76 entering the final period. The superstar center fell one assist shy of his first triple-double of the season, adding 19 rebounds and five blocks.

Los Angeles took its largest lead at 116-78 on a dunk by Robert Horry with 9:25 remaining. The Lakers cleared their bench in the fourth quarter, with Bryant and O'Neal enjoying most of the action from the sidelines.

"That was an old-fashioned butt-kicking," Issel said. Thank goodness it counts for only one loss in the standings."

Glen Rice added 19 points and seven assists for the Lakers, who shot 49 percent (52-of-107) from the field en route to their 14th straight home win.

Antonio McDyess scored 23 points, Ron Mercer added 18 and former Laker Nick Van Exel 17 for Denver, which shot 44 percent (37-of-85) and was outrebounded, 59-38.

"From the beginning, they had it out for us," McDyess said. "I think they felt like they owed us for beating them down in Denver, so they came out on fire.

Nuggets forward Popeye Jones, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day, scored seven points in 18 minutes before fouling out.
