Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Dan Majerle made a career-best nine 3-pointers as the Miami Heat opened a four-game road trip with a 116-106 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Majerle was 11-of-13 from the field, including 9-of-10 from behind the arc, for a season-high 33 points. He has been lethal from 3-point range lately, shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) on Miami's 2-2 homestand.

"I've shot like that a couple of times," Majerle said. "I think once with Miami and once back in Phoenix. It's always fun to shoot like this. It was just one of those nights. We've had different guys step up for us all year, and this was a big game for us. It was the start of a four-game road trip and we've had some tough losses at home."

The Heat shot 56 percent (45-of-81) from the field and swept the two-game season series from the Timberwolves. Miami (22-11) moved into a tie with Indiana for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Miami used only three players off the bench -- Voshon Lenard, Otis Thorpe and Clarence Weatherspoon -- but they outscored Minnesota's reserves, 39-33. Lenard had 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting while Thorpe made 7-of-8 shots and scored 15.

"Voshon shot the ball extremely well," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "I thought (Mashburn) and Anthony (Carter) played really well. It was just a good win. The bench the other night (Saturday's 90-89 loss to New Jersey) was really disappointed. They had only four points and we played a lot of guys. I think tonight they were committed to play well and make a contribution."

Kevin Garnett matched a season high with 35 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Minnesota, which had a five-game winning streak stopped. Anthony Peeler scored 16 points and Terrell Brandon added 15 and 11 assists for the Timberwolves, who made 43-of-81 shots after shooting a team record 64 percent (52-of-81) in Sunday's 123-112 win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

"We shot 53 percent tonight, and it looked like we didn't shoot the ball well," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "But when you play one game where you're knocking down everything, sometimes I think we got a little bit frustrated at times."

Jamal Mashburn had 13 points and nine assists and rookie Anthony Carter handed out 13 assists for Miami, which had 38 team assists and allowed just 11 points off turnovers.

Majerle scored eight points, hitting all three of his shots, as the Heat jumped out to a 27-23 lead after the first period.

Mashburn made a layup to cap a 7-0 spurt and push Miami's lead to 36-25 with 9:02 left in the second period. The Heat took 57-47 lead into the locker room.

Majerle ignited a 9-0 fourth-period burst that gave Miami its biggest lead, 99-78, when Otis Thorpe hit a 17-footer with 8:29 to play.

Minnesota put together an 11-3 surge to cut the deficit to 107-102 when Peeler drove for a layup with 1:25 to go. Lenard sank a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left to give the Heat a 112-104 advntage and Majerle followed with a pair of free throws eight seconds later.

"It was one of those nights," Garnett said. "We played well, but we didn't make the crucial stops down the stretch. We had them down to five, but they hit a big three. Thunder Dan had a marvelous night."
