Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- In a matchup of premier point guards, Gary Payton scored 23 points and handed out 13 assists as the Seattle SuperSonics posted a 101-88 triumph over Jason Kidd and the Phoenix Suns.

Payton played 43 minutes, made 10-of-21 shots, grabbed four rebounds and committed just one turnover. He directed a balanced attack that saw Brent Barry score 21 points off the bench and Ruben Patterson add 17.

Kidd was locked up by the player nicknamed "The Glove." He had 12 points and 15 assists but made only 5-of-15 shots and committed three turnovers.

"We played a lot of good defense," Payton said. "They missed a lot of shots they normally make. We played really well on defense, we rotated well and anticipated a lot of stuff. This is the first time we've done this at home in quite a while. We need a win, that's all we were thinking about."

"You know you really can't keep Kidd under control," said Sonics coach Paul Westphal, who beat his former team for the first time. "Maybe he just wasn't hitting his shots. We were able to keep a hand in his face on most of his shots. I also think we also did a good job of not giving him too many second shots."

Cliff Robinson led Phoenix with 17 points and Rex Chapman added 13. The Suns have dropped three straight games and seven of their last nine after reeling off four consecutive wins in mid-December.

A 3-pointer by Chapman got Phoenix within 73-67 a minute into the fourth quarter but Barry countered with a 3-pointer and Greg Foster had a layup. Rodney Rogers had a driving layup with 8:47 to go that drew the Suns within 78-69 but Vin Baker drained a 16-footer to ignite a 16-5 burst.

Barry had five points, Baker and Rashard Lewis four apiece and Payton three to account for the Sonics offense.

"They basically just outplayed us from the time the ball went up," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "We closed it to six and then turned around and gave Barry a 3. We just made a lot of silly plays that put us in a hole."

"I just tried to relax and shoot the shots that become available to me and also handle the ball a little bit more," Barry said. "It's a big game for us in the sense we needed the win at home really badly. We needed to beat a team that is supposed to be a contender in this conference. Our defense was solid and we did a good job of following the game plan."

Patterson had 10 points in the first quarter but the Suns led 25-19. Phoenix still held a 31-28 lead 3 1/2 minutes into the second quarter when Barry buried a 3-pointer to ignite a 12-3 burst. Baker capped the burst with an 18-footer with 5:02 left in the half.

Payton, who had 11 points in the quarter, pushed the lead to 47-38 and the Sonics took a 51-45 lead into the half.

Phoenix got within 55-50 2:48 into the third quarter following a 16-footer by Tom Gugliotta. But Patterson hit two free throws and Horace Grant buried a 21-footer and the Sonics maintained a 73-62 lead heading into the final 12 minutes.
