Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- With the New York Knicks trying to slow down red-hot Grant Hill, Lindsey Hunter took advantage and put together his best game of the season.

Hunter made 7-of-10 3-pointers and scored a season-high 29 points as the Detroit Pistons continued their strong play with a 114-108 triumph over New York.

Hunter made 9-of-18 shots overall and played a key role in a decisive 21-4 burst late in the third quarter. He also added a clutch block and assist late in the contest, when New York drew within a basket.

"From the jump ball I felt good tonight," Hunter said. "Some nights are like that. Anytime you get guys scoring, it is hard to stop. ... I had open shots and when I have open shots I'm going to make them. I got on a roll and it felt pretty good."

"The guys were a little more focused on playing Hill but we have to defend everybody," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "If he is open, as much as he was, you should expect it."

Hill, the NBA Player of the Week, scored 29 points and had seven assists. He has scored 184 points in his last five contests and led Detroit to seven wins in its last eight games.

Jerry Stackhouse also scored 29 points for the Pistons, who improved to 12-5 at home and avenged a loss to New York here on November 5.

The Knicks, who hung on at home to defeat Chicago on Tuesday, got within 93-91 with 5:02 remaining. But Hill sank a baseline jumper and Hunter blocked a shot by Allan Houston that led to a breakaway dunk by Stackhouse.

"I was surprised I blocked a shot," Hunter added. "Allan usually gets a lot higher than that on his jumper. I think it was more luck than anything else. I'm a smaller guy so I just try to use my quickness."

"I thought we played well from an energy standpoint," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "We did a good job of getting the guys the ball at the specific time that they were going good. I thought the biggest play of the game was Lindsey's block of Allan Houston."

Latrell Sprewell led New York with 23 points and former Piston Houston added 22. Patrick Ewing had 20 and nine rebounds.

New York led 64-62 with 6:20 to go in the third quarter after a layup by Kurt Thomas but Hunter buried a 3-pointer 15 seconds later to give Detroit the lead for good. Hunter made it 68-64 with another 3-pointer from the right wing before Chris Childs scored for the Knicks.

The Pistons led 70-68 when Stackhouse made two free throws and Hunter drained another 3-pointer. Hunter grabbed a rebound with 2:29 left and Hill turned it into a three-point play. Hunter made it 81-68 with his own three-point play before Hill capped the burst with two free throws with 31 seconds remaining.

The Knicks scored 33 points in the opening quarter as Sprewell had nine and Houston and Charlie Ward added eight apiece. But New York led by only four after 12 minutes and saw Detroit draw even following a three-point play by Hunter with just under five minutes left in the opening half.

"We wanted an up-and-down game," Hill said. "Even though we gave up 30 points in the first quarter we were happy about it because we wanted to play at our tempo. If it was a 100-point game it was going to be to our advantage."

The Knicks are 7-2 in the first half of back-to-back contests and 2-7 in the second half. The 114 points were the most scored against New York this season.
