Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Just when the New Jersey Nets are ready to run, they stub their toe at home.

Antoine Walker scored a season-high 39 points, including his team's final seven, as the Boston Celtics posted a 99-96 triumph over the Nets.

The surging Nets appeared primed for their eighth win in 10 games when Stephon Marbury knotted the contest at 94-94 with a driving layup with 69 seconds left. But Walker scored five straight points to help Boston record just its third victory in 17 road games.

"Antoine played great," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "He reminded me of Bernard King when I coached the Knicks the way he dominated the low post tonight. It was a beautiful team effort. We played extremely well defensively."

"I was a little fired up," said Walker, who was 17-of-29 from the field. "When it's close you tend to show a little emotion."

The Nets had won four straight games before consecutive losses at Indiana and home to Vancouver. They rebounded to win three in a row but tonight were done in by 18 turnovers and 38 percent (29-of-76) shooting.

A game that featured 19 ties came down to the final 90 seconds. Walker hit a layup to give the Celtics a 94-92 lead but Marbury's running six-footer knotted the contest. Walker answered again for Boston with a tip-in with 22 seconds to go.

The Nets called timeout but Kendall Gill's inbounds pass was stolen by Walker, who broke free for a dunk. Trailing 98-94, New Jersey opted to rush the ball upcourt but Vitaly Potapenko got a piece of Marbury's drive and Walker was fouled. He made 1-of-2 from the line for a 99-94 lead.

"I think he played great tonight," Nets forward Keith Van Horn said. "He made some big plays at the end. You have to give him credit."

"My man was wide open," Gill said of the inbounds pass. "I didn't see Walker until the last second when it left my hands. He suckered us in tonight."

Van Horn and Kerry Kittles led New Jersey with 20 points apiece and Marbury added 17 and seven assists. The Nets made just 3-of-18 3-pointers but were able to stay close by making 35-of-45 free throws and holding a 49-42 rebounding advantage.

Van Horn had 10 points and seven rebounds in the opening quarter as New Jersey made 10-of-18 shots and held a 29-24 lead. The Celtics closed to 47-45 at the half as Walker had 17 at the break.

Walker and Potapenko added 11 rebounds apiece for the Celtics.

"It was his best game defensively of the season," Boston point guard Kenny Anderson said. "There is no doubt that he will score the points but he was outstanding on the other side of the ball."

"I think without question it is great when you step it up defensively," Walker added. "You really can't stop a player in this league. It is a matter of how hard you want it and how hard you make it for them to make shots. I think we did a good job of that."
