Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Austin Croshere came off the bench to bail out the Indiana Pacers for a second straight night as they avoided a major letdown by holding on for a 96-89 victory over the slumping Orlando Magic.

One night after handing the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers their first loss in 17 games, the Pacers nearly gave the Magic their first win in six contests. Orlando used a 20-5 burst in the third quarter and took a 75-69 lead into the final period before the Pacers woke up with help from their second-year backup forward.

Croshere, who scored 10 fourth-quarter points to spark the Pacers to a 111-102 triumph over the Lakers on Friday, scored nine of his 14 during a 14-2 fourth-quarter spurt that put Indiana ahead to stay, 83-77, with 7:24 to play.

Travis Best came off the bench to score 13 points and reserves Chris Mullin and Sam Perkins combined for 17 more as Indiana's bench outscored Orlando's backups, 44-33. Best and Croshere combined to scored 20 consecutive fourth-quarter points in Friday's triumph.

"We felt like we could isolate (Croshere) on the wing and let him do his thing," Best said. "He's a good 1-on-1 player, athletic, strong and has a nice touch. He can get guys up in the air off a pump fake because they have to respect that.

"We know the big picture is to put ourselves in good position for the playoffs and we need every victory," he added. "(Last night) was a great win for us, but we knew we had to move on and knew how dangerous this team was."

Dale Davis led Indiana's starting five with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Pacers improved the Eastern Conference's best record to 25-11 with their 10th win in 12 games.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 18 points and Darrell Armstrong added 17 for Orlando, which has lost a season-high six in a row after looking like the NBA's surprise team for most of the season. The Magic have lost 11 of 12 after a solid 15-11 start.

"The moral victory is getting really old for me. I want a real victory," Orlando first-year coach Doc Rivers said. "The moral victory does not show up on the stat sheet. Tomorrow it will say loss, which is very, very difficult."

Armstrong scored six points during Orlando's third-quarter run, including a pair of free throws that snapped a 64-64 tie with six minutes left in the period. Bo Outlaw and Adbul-Wahad had back-to-back slams before Abdul-Wahad's layup made it 73-66 with 2:43 left.

Reggie Miller finally answered with a 3-pointer for the Pacers, who relied heavily on their reserves in the final period.

"We feel like whoever is out there is going to do the job," Best said. "We all have a lot of faith in each other and most of us have been playing together for a while."

Croshere opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, two free throws and a 13-footer to shave the deficit to 77-76 with 9:58 remaining. Perkins framed a layup by Croshere with one of his own and a 3-pointer to put Indiana ahead to stay, 83-77, with 7:24 left.

Chris Gatling made a free throw and Armstrong followed with a 3-pointer but Mullin caught fire, draining three consecutive shots from beyond the arc to open a 92-85 cushion with just over two minutes left.

"Austin, Chris and Travis played well again," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We need that production from our bench, especially when our starters were dragging a little bit. They stepped up and did a good job."

"I always feel it," Mullin said of his shooting touch. "Larry relies on us and gives us chances to produce. As long as you play hard, he doesn't ask a whole lot except that. We talked about it and if we dropped this game, last night's game means nothing."

Rik Smits scored 12 points, Miller 11 and Jalen Rose 10 for Indiana, which shot 45 percent (37-of-82) and lost the battle on the boards, 50-45. The Pacers yielded 15 points off turnovers and were outscored in the paint, 46-40.

Gatling scored 13 points and John Amaechi added 10 for the Magic, who shot 41 percent (37-of-91) and committed 13 turnovers.

"We've been trying to play through (the slump) and have been handling it well as far as competing," Gatling added. "Sometimes we get in trouble in the fourth quarter. I think we get a little antsy and pull the trigger a bit. But mostly it's a little glitch here and there. You've got to understand, we've been playing together a short time and guys are still trying to find their niche."
