Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 24 points as the streaking Utah Jazz used a big second-quarter burst to coast to a 112-75 thrashing of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The victory was the 700th of Utah coach Jerry Sloan's career. Sloan, who coached the Chgicago Bulls for two-plus seasons from 1979-82, also notched his first coaching victory with the Jazz against the Clippers on December 10, 1988.

"I just wish they didn't have numbers like that," Sloan said modestly. "The players are the ones who win the games. I'm just lucky to have a job."

The Jazz, who have won four straight games and eight of their last nine, have not lost at home to Los Angeles since April 18, 1989, a span of 21 games.

Malone hit 9-of-19 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds despite playing only 27 minutes.

"A lot of folks are saying the Jazz are too old, but these guys can still play," Malone said. "Look in the other locker room where you have a bunch of young guys and ask them if we can still play."

The Clippers led 33-30 with 10-59 left in the second quarter, but Utah responded with a 12-0 run to open a 42-33 lead with 4:47 remaining. The Jazz led 56-44 at halftime.

Los Angeles closed to 66-58 on a basket by Derek Anderson at the 6:02 mark. Utah's Jeff Hornacek scored nine points to key a 16-6 run and extend the advantage to 82-64 entering the final period.

"In the second quarter, they ran and got the lead," Clippers' coach Chris Ford said. "We stayed close in the first half but in the third and fourth quarters we didn't have anything. They were scoring at will."

Utah played its bench throughout the fourth quarter, outscoring the overmatched Clippers 30-11 in the period. The final score represented the Jazz's largest lead.

Ford was asked whether his team could take anything positive from the lopsided defeat.

"No, not from this game," Ford said. "It's one of those games where the guys should be looking to see what the guys they were guarding did."

"We have to keep working to get better," said rookie Lamar Odom, who scored only 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting. "Talent-wise, where good. But to hell with talent. I don't care how good we look on paper. To me, that makes it even more embarrassing to be losing like this."

Hornacek and Bryon Russell finished with 17 points apiece for Utah, which shot 51 percent (46-of-92). Armen Gilliam had his best game since joining the Jazz, collecting 13 points and 12 rebounds.

"I think Armen's come in and tried very hard to get an understanding of what we are trying to do," Sloan said. "In all fairness to him, I think he'll get better when we get a chance to practice."

Anderson and Michael Olowokandi each scored 18 points for the Clippers, who have lost four straight and eight of nine. Los Angeles shot only 38 percent (31-of-81) and was outrebounded, 56-36.

"We're still working on playing as a team," Odom said. "Our chemistry is nowhere near where it should be. I'm so disappointed in our performance individually and as a team. It's just sickening."
