Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns have had trouble scoring over the last eight games. Cliff Robinson changed that in one night.

Robinson scored a career-high and NBA season-best 50 points as the Phoenix Suns won for only the third time in nine games, 113-100 over the slumping Denver Nuggets.

Robinson made 17-of-26 shots the field and was 13-of-15 at the line in 43 minutes to break the America West Arena scoring record. Kevin Johnson set the previous mark with 42 points against Denver on April 3, 1994.

"It was one of those games where the outside shot was going," Robinson said. "The guys did a tremendous job of getting me the ball when I was open and I just tried to be aggressive and knock down shots."

The 11-year veteran forward broke the NBA season high of 47 points, set only two days ago by Vince Carter of the Toronto Raptors. Robinson's 23 first-quarter points equaled the team record set by Charlie Scott in 1973 and matched by Eddie Johnson in 1988.

"It kind of set in then that things were going pretty good even though I missed the first two shots," Robinson said. "After you miss some shots, you always look for some easy ones."

"Cliff played like an All-Star, there is no doubt about it," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "If you look at the starting three-men in the West, I don't know who has had a better year than Cliff."

The starters for the All-Star Game will be announced January 29.

"There's a lot of guys who deserve to be All-Stars, Clifford is certainly one of them," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "The focus has been on Antonio (McDyess of Denver) and (Tom Gugliotta of Phoenix), but he was the one who stepped up tonight."

Robinson's effort was the third-highest total in Suns' history. Tom Chambers scored 56 points on February 18, 1990 and broke his own mark on March 24 of that year with 60.

The Suns took control with 12 straight points, opening a 103-86 lead with 6:50 left. Robinson, whose previous career high was 41 with Portland on January 7, 1996, had five points in that spurt and capped it with a 16-footer.

Phoenix, which has won 10 of the last 11 meetings with Denver, had failed to score 100 points in its last eight contests, averaging 88.0 points per game. It was also the Suns' fifth straight home win against the Nuggets.

Utah's Karl Malone was the last player to score at least 50 points, netting 56 against Golden State on April 7, 1998.

Ron Mercer scored 25 points and Raef LaFrentz added 16 for the Nuggets, who suffered their season-high fourth straight loss. It is their longest slide since closing last season with a seven-game skid.

Denver has dropped five straight road games and fell to 3-12 away from home.

Robinson's first-quarter heroics, including eight points during a 10-1 run, gave Phoenix a 33-17 cushion with 64 seconds left. He finished the half with 29 as the Suns led, 61-55.

"He gained confidence from the beginning and they kept getting him the ball and he kept producing," McDyess said of Robinson. "He came out on fire. I only guarded him for two possessions."

Jason Kidd hit a finger roll just before the first-half buzzer for Phoenix, but Issel did not think it should have counted. He picked up his second technical and was ejected.
