Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- David Robinson scored 25 of his season-high 38 points in the first half and drew a crucial charge in the game's waning moments as the San Antonio Spurs held on for a 99-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Robinson was 18-of-27 from the field, blocked three shots and grabbed 11 rebounds, taking some of the burden off the broad shoulders of fellow "Twin Tower" Tim Duncan and helping the Spurs snap a two-game skid.

"The jump shot was good tonight," Robinson said. "I've been working on my jump shot a lot of during practice. This was a very important game for us and every game is important for us the rest of the way."

"Offensively, it was my best game of the year," he added. "But I don't judge my game by offense. It's when I'm forcing the other team to change what they do that matters to me. And I count on rebounding, too."

San Antonio appeared to be cruising to its eighth straight win over Los Angeles before the Clippers mounted a fourth-quarter charge. Los Angeles scored eight straight points and had the ball with a chance to tie when Maurice Taylor drove the lane with less than a minute to play. Robinson stepped in front of the power forward and was knocked to the floor, drawing the charge.

"David's been great," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "At the very beginning of the year, he had some problems. But since then he's been fine. He was feeling really good, obviously. We need that."

Avery Johnson made a layup on the ensuing possession, giving San Antonio a 98-93 cushion with 28 seconds left.

Duncan had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs, who pulled within one game of idle Utah for first place in the Midwest Division. San Antonio improved to 10-10 on the road after going 16-9 away from the Alamodome during the lockout-shortened campaign.

"It's a great win for us," Duncan said. "I don't care what the score was, a road win is a good win because we're not playing real well on the road."

Taylor returned after receiving stitches over his left eye following a collision with Duncan. He scored 22 points and grabbed 12 boards for the Clippers, who have lost five in a row and nine of 10 since a season-high three-game winning streak.

"They're a big team and they play big," Taylor said. "You've got to take them off the dribble."

The game capped the only Lakers-Clippers day-night doubleheader at the Staples Center this season. The Lakers suffered an 82-81 setback against Seattle here this afternoon.

Keith Closs scored a season-high 13 points in the first half. But the thin 7-3 center repeatedly was burned by Robinson along the interior as the 7-1 pivotman used his well-developed frame to drive to the basket.

"Keith did a great job for us off the bench tonight and we need him to continue to play like that all the time for us to be a competitive team in this league," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said.

Derek Anderson scored 17 points, Troy Hudson added 15 and Eric Piatkowski 13 off the bench for Los Angeles, which yielded 23 points off turnovers. Rookie sensation Lamar Odom had a dreadful night for the Clippers, misfiring on 15-of-18 shots, including five 3-pointers, to finish with eight points.

Johnson had eight points and nine assists for the Spurs, who shot 55 percent (42-of-76) and held a 44-39 advantage on the boards.

"I just think that sometimes you just gotta give the other team credit," Johnson said. "They beat Indiana here the other night (January 8) and Indiana is a pretty good ballclub."

Taylor scored 10 points to help the Clippers jump out to a 33-27 lead after one quarter. But Robinson and the Spurs came roaring back in the second period.

Robinson capped a 17-10 run with a 17-footer that put San Antonio ahead to stay, 44-43, with 4:22 remaining in the half. Jaren Jackson followed with a 3-pointer and Robinson added a layup before a thunderous dunk gave San Antonio a 59-52 bulge at intermission. The Spurs outscored the Clippers, 31-19, in the second quarter.

Los Angeles shot 45 percent (38-of-85) and was outscored in the paint, 56-46.
