Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 25 points to lead the Seattle SuperSonics to their season-high sixth straight victory, 99-80 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The six-game streak is Seattle's longest since the start of last season, when they started 6-0. The SuperSonics have won eight of their last nine contests since a season-high five-game losing streak in late December.

"Right now were on a roll," Payton said. "All of us are staying real consistent. When we were winning earlier (in the season), everybody got real happy and we were relaxing. Now we don't relax."

"We feel we have a special team here," said Vin Baker, who scored 28 points. "In the locker room, we're very focused. We don't celebrate after every win."

Cleveland drew to 72-71 on a slam by Andrew DeClercq with 10:52 remaining. But Payton scored seven points to key an 18-2 run that made it 90-73 with 4:20 left and the Sonics never looked back.

"I think we got frustrated when our shots didn't go down," said Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman, regarding his team's drought in the fourth quarter. "We started forcing some things which led to turnovers, which led to them breaking out and extending the lead."

Seattle opened the game with a 15-3 run and Baker scored 14 points in the quarter for a 29-15 lead. The Cavaliers closed the second period with a 10-2 spurt to get within 46-40 at halftime.

Cleveland battled back to take its first lead of the contest, 52-51, on a drive by former Sonic Shawn Kemp at the 7:26 mark of the third quarter. But Seattle responded with a 13-4 run, opening a 64-56 cushion with 4:17 left.

Kemp was ineffective in his second return to Seattle, scoring only 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting to go with five turnovers. He is 0-4 against his former team.

"We had a chance to stay in this game till the end," Kemp said. "We just gave up and lost our confidence. We basically just stopped playing."

Brent Barry added 21 points and seven assists for Seattle, which shot 52 percent (38-of-74) from the floor and held a 41-38 rebounding edge.

Lamond Murray scored 20 points for the Cavaliers, who have dropped 10 straight to Seattle and fell to 1-3 on their gruelling seven-game road trip. Cleveland shot only 37 percent (31-of-83) and surrendered 22 points off 17 turnovers.

"Gary Payton took over (in the fourth quarter)," Murray said. "They got a rest because they had such a big lead. We need to play the whole game at the level we played in the second quarter."
