Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- With a chance to upset the Los Angeles Lakers, Shawn Kemp started fouling and the rest of his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates followed.

Kemp fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and the Lakers shot 22 free throws in the period as they rallied for a 95-86 victory over the slumping Cavaliers.

Kemp entered the final quarter with four fouls but departed with his sixth foul with 5:14 to go. He committed two of Cleveland's 16 fouls in the period as Los Angeles was whistled for only eight.

"We've been in basically every game this season except for two," Kemp said. "We've got some tough calls all season. The foul calls take our aggressiveness away from the game. Not having a lot of big men who can score, if I'm in trouble at the end of the ballgame you better believe it's going tto be a big difference out there on the court."

The Lakers went into the bonus with 8:56 left and made 17-of-23 free throws while the Cavaliers made 5-of-5, all in the last 84 seconds after the outcome had been decided.

"Down the stretch, they got 23 free throws and we got five," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said. "Offensive fouls that are being called at our end, fouls coming out of the blue -- I didn't think we got a fair shake. The hand-check fouls they called on us in the fourth quarter, you can't tell me those same things aren't going on down at the other end."

Shaquille O'Neal had 27 points and 23 rebounds and Kobe Bryant added 25 and 13 for the Lakers, who bounced back from Monday's one-point loss to Seattle that ended their 14-game home winning streak. In the fourth quarter, O'Neal was 4-of-9 from the line, Bryant was 8-of-8 and Robert Horry 3-of-4.

Rookie Andre Miller scored 20 points for the Cavs, who had not lost a road game to the Lakers since November 18, 1994. Kemp collected 14 points and eight rebounds before fouling out for the sixth time this season and 102nd career. The all-time NBA record is 127 by Vern Mikkelson, who played with Minneapolis in the 1950s.

For the 12th time this season, the Cavs blew a lead of at least nine points.

"We've had problems with Cleveland since I've been here," said Bryant, a four-year veteran. "Cleveland always seems to play us tough. What the reason is, I don't know, but they always give us a tough game."

Los Angeles trailed by 15 points midway through the third period but cut the deficit to 73-67 entering the fourth quarter. The Lakers still trailed by six after a jumper by Miller with 8:07 to go but took control with a 10-0 burst that featured six free throws.

Bryant made a pair and O'Neal had a follow shot. A jumper by Bryant tied it and Horry's two free throws gave the Lakers the lead for good before O'Neal sank two foul shots for an 83-79 lead as Kemp fouled out.

After a turnover by Bryant, Brevin Knight made a jumper with 4:39 remaining. But Glen Rice made two free throws and Derek Fisher drilled a 3-pointer for an 88-81 lead with 2:24 to go. Los Angeles made 5-of-8 free throws the rest of the way.

Bryant's turnover prompted a timeout and he was greeted by a screaming Phil Jackson. Bryant shouted back at the coach.

"I know that Kobe wanted to go out there and get it done for us," jackson said. "He wanted to do it on his own and it wasn't going to happen for us. We had to get it done in a more subtle way using our offense more in finding an open man."

"I just told him that I try tto make plays sometimes and it doesn't come out the right way sometimes," Bryant said. "But I'm out there playing my heart out. It's cool; just go out there and put it behind you."

Rice scored 17 points and Fisher added 11 for the Lakers, who made 35-of-50 free throws and held a 59-50 rebounding edge to offset 35 percent shooting (28-of-81) from the field.

Knight scored 15 points and Lamond Murray added 12 for the Cavs, who sank 21-of-32 foul shots and 38 percent (32-of-84) from the floor.

"We played the game that we wanted to play," Wittman said. "For three quarters things went our way, and then I thought we didn't get favorable calls down the stretch."

Miller scored 10 points and Bob Sura added all nine of his in the first half as Cleveland opened a 50-42 lead. Bryant (15), O'Neal (12) and Rice (9) accounted for all but six of the Lakers' points.

A 3-pointer by Rice cut the deficit to four points before Kemp scored the first seven points in a 9-0 surge capped at 63-48 on a driving layup by Knight with 6:16 left in the third quarter.
