Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Wesley and Eddie Jones fueled a 40-point third quarter as the Charlotte Hornets rallied for a 109-100 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, who had their season-high four-game winning streak snapped.

Wesley scored 11 of his 15 points and Jones 10 of his 23 in the third period, when Charlotte shot 57 percent (12-of-21) from the field and raced to an 87-68 lead. The quarter also featured the ejection of Philadelphia coach Larry Brown.

Derrick Coleman scored 23 points for the Hornets, who withstood an early flurry by Allen Iverson and a late rally by the 76ers for their third straight victory. Charlotte is 3-1 since the death of guard Bobby Phills in an auto accident eight days ago and improved the Eastern Conference's best home record to 15-2.

Iverson scored 35 points on 15-of-26 shooting for the Sixers, who were outscored 38-20 from the foul line and lost for just the third time in 12 games. Philadelphia dropped to 0-2 against Charlotte.

A 3-pointer by Iverson pulled the Sixers within 69-65 with 3:12 left in the third quarter before Philadelphia unraveled. Wesley made a jumper and 3-pointer and Brown was tossed for arguing a traveling call against Iverson with 2:03 to go.

Charlotte made three free throws before Wesley drilled another 3-pointer and Brad Miller scored inside for an 82-65 bulge with 48 seconds left. The Sixers made three foul shots but had a terrible sequence in the final seconds.

With 4.3 seconds left, Aaron McKie fouled Coleman, who made both free throws. Matt Geiger's inbounds pass was intercepted and Wesley hit a 3-pointer before the horn for an 87-68 advantage.

Using a half-court trap, the Sixers rallied and cut the deficit to 103-98 on a free throw by Iverson with 1:34 to go. However, Iverson missed the second foul shot, had a drive smothered on the next possession and saw his finger roll spin out, leading to a breakaway dunk by Jones that sealed it with 34 seconds left.

Anthony Mason had 10 points and nine rebounds and Elden Campbell scored 10 points for the Hornets, who shot 46 percent (33-of-72) and blocked 12 shots -- five by Campbell and four by Coleman.

Tyrone Hill scored 17 points and George Lynch 16 for the Sixers, who shot 45 percent (39-of-87). Brown was ejected for the third time this season.

Iverson came out flying. He scored 16 points on 8-of-10 from the field in the first quarter as Philadelphia raced to a 31-24 lead. However, Charlotte asserted itself inside in the second period, repeatedly challenging and blocking shots.

Two free throws by Jones capped a 10-2 burst, giving the Hornets a 34-33 lead with 7:56 left in the first half. Charlotte led by as many as five points before Philadelphia reclaimed a 49-47 edge at halftime.

The Hornets took the lead for good at 57-56 with 6:46 left in the third period on a dunk by Jones, who also had eight assists.
