Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury bounced back in a big way.

One night after throwing up an ill-advised shot at the buzzer in New York, Marbury had 34 points and a season-high 15 assists to lead the New Jersey Nets to a thrilling 122-120 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

On Wednesday, Marbury ignored an open teammate, drove the lane and threw up a desperation layup airball in the waning seconds of a 91-90 loss to the Knicks.

Tonight, the 6-2 point guard made 13-of-23 shots, including a pair of highlight-reel jumpers. More importantly, he elevated the play of his teammates, finding the open man when drawing double coverage in the lane.

"I was hitting guys with easy passes," Marbury said. "It was my best shooting night in a while. But I knew it would eventually come around. You just shoot it and concentrate and eventually it just clicks. Guys were hitting me on the go and I got great looks."

"Marbury was great tonight," Detroit forward Grant Hill added. "I think we played the second half the way we are capable of playing. Stephon Marbury made great plays. He is a great player making great plays."

Jamie Feick grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds for the Nets, who appeared to have matters wrapped up early as Keith Van Horn scored 18 of his 28 points in the first half. Marbury beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer to give the Nets a 66-52 bulge.

"I was aware when I walked in (at halftime) and everybody was saying how many rebounds I had," Feick said of his 19 boards at the half. "I was trying not to get caught up in that. The main thing was winning the game."

"I mean that one guy outrebounded our whole entire team," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry added. "When you dig yourself a hole that big, it is hard to come back."

But Christian Laettner scored 15 of his 28 points in the third quarter and Detroit erased a 17-point second-half deficit, taking a 103-102 lead on Laettner's free throws with 6:21 to play.

The teams exhanged the lead 11 times down the stretch before Scott Burrell put New Jersey ahead to stay, 119-118, with a lefthanded layup in the lane with 48 seconds remaining. Marbury assisted on the layup and hit a running jumper on the Nets' ensuing trip to stretch the advantage to three.

"We lost the lead late in the game, fortunately Stephon and Scotty Burrell made some spectacular plays toward the end," Van Horn said.

The Pistons had a chance to tie but Lindsey Hunter's 16-footer clanged off the front of the rim with 2.1 seconds left, landing harmlessly into Feick's hands as time expired.

Feick and Kerry Kittles scored 12 points apiece for the Nets, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

"We needed a win," Nets coach Don Casey said. "That was a good win for us against a great team. We stood our ground and that is what this team has been doing, even in the losses."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 28 points and Hill added 23 for Detroit, which had taken three of the last four meetings with New Jersey.

"We had an opportunity, we had a shot at the basket," Stackhouse said. "So we cannot be upset at that. What we have to be upset at is how we started off the game. We cannot dig ourselves an 18-point hole and expect to just get back into the game."

Laettner's third-quarter explosion pulled Detroit within 93-89 entering the final period. Burrell answered Laettner's go-ahead free throws with a 12-footer, setting the stage for a furious back-and-forth battle over the final six minutes.

Stackhouse, who was an astounding 17-of-18 from the line, made two free throws to give Detroit a 105-104 lead before Johnny Newman's layup pushed New Jersey back ahead with 5:34 left.

Stackhouse had a driving layup and Marbury made two free throws before Stackhouse made two more from the stripe and Marbury connected on a 19-footer to give the Nets a 110-109 lead with 3:34 remaining.

New Jersey appeared to have some breathing room when Marbury made it 114-111 on a 20-footer with 2:29 to go but Hunter responded by drilling a tying 24-footer on Detroit's next trip.

Stackhouse made four more free throws around another jumper by Marbury before Burrell's lefthanded scoop in the lane put the Nets ahead to stay with 48 seconds left.

"We really needed this win and no matter how we got it, we had to get one tonight," Burrell said.

Kendall Gill scored 12 points for New Jersey, which shot 51 percent (46-of-90) and held a 38-34 advantage on the boards.

Michael Curry scored 14 points off the bench for the Pistons, who shot 54 percent (39-of-72) and yielded just nine points off turnovers.
