Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Sam Mitchell matched a season high with 20 points and Bobby Jackson had a solid all-around effort to lift the Minnesota Timberwolves to their fourth straight road win, a 95-89 victory over the lifeless Los Angeles Clippers.

Mitchell made 8-of-14 shots, including a pair of long jumpers during a decisive fourth-quarter run, as Minnesota won for the eighth time in its last nine road games and avenged a disappointing 89-85 home loss to the Clippers on November 17.

"Sam Mitchell kept us in the game when we weren't playing very well," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "He hit some very big shots for us."

Jackson, starting for injured point guard Terrell Brandon, had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Timberwolves have won 14 of 17 following a season-high eight-game losing streak.

"We got together (after the losing streak) and talked it over," Jackson said. "First thing was to get focused on our games and to stay focused. All of us have to be mentally prepared every night we play. It all starts there. Now we know we can go anywhere and win, road or home."

Minnesota's Kevin Garnett scored 18 points got back at Clippers Angeles forward Tyrone Nesby, who goaded the Timberwolves' big man mercilessly during the Clippers' win at Minnesota.

Rookie sensation Lamar Odom had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped seven in a row and 11 of 12 overall since a season-high three-game winning streak.

"A lot of players have tried to turn this team around," Odom said. "A lot of people haven't been able to accept the challenge but I definitely am up to the challenge."

Malik Sealy scored 16 points and Anthony Peeler added 12 off the bench for Minnesota, which outscored Los Angeles 26-17 in the final period.

The Timberwolves trailed 77-71 with 10:13 to play after Eric Murdock made a pair of free throws. But Jackson and Mitchell hit back-to-back 20-footers before Peeler's 3-pointer put Minnesota up by one.

Maurice Taylor answered with a jumper but Mitchell hit a 19-footer, Garnett was good from 20 feet and Peeler's 15-footer made it 84-79 with 6:02 left.

Derek Anderson's layup pulled the Clippers within 89-87 with 1:59 remaining but Joe Smith made two from the line and Jackson followed with a brilliant steal and layup to rebuild the lead to six with 1:27 to go.

"Tonight we stepped it up late, put defensive pressure on them and Bobby kept pressure on their guards," Smith said. "Bobby made a great steal at the end of the game to put them away."

"We've come a long way since we lost to (the Clippers) at home," Jackson added. "We took them too lightly. This was a very big win for us. We had to get this game."

Taylor and Anderson scored 14 points apiece and Nesby added 10 for Los Angeles, which shot 48 percent (39-of-82) and held a 44-39 advantage on the boards.

"We as players just didn't execute," Taylor said. "We don't have the mentality to finish off teams. We have been in every game, with the exception of Utah (on Saturday). We just play good enough to come up short."

The Timberwolves shot 43 percent (37-of-86) and forced 20 turnovers.

"The turnovers came at crucial times and we had too many offensive fouls," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "In crunch time, it's kind of tough to win when we cannot execute."
