Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Whatever new club president Michael Jordan told the Washington Wizards at Thursday's practice worked like a charm tonight.

Juwan Howard scored a season-high 36 points and Rod Strickland matched his season-best with 27 as the Wizards snapped out of a serious funk by rallying for a 123-113 victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers.

Jordan, who was named to his new position before Monday's 104-86 loss to Dallas, attended his first practice on Thursday and even hinted that he may occasionally run with the Wizards during their preparation.

Jordan was nowhere to be seen at tonight's contest but agent and friend David Falk -- who also represents Howard and Strickland -- had a courtside seat and was on his cellular phone for most of the fourth quarter.

"Every time Michael comes around, he has a tendency to make guys up their game a little bit -- even when he was playing, because he was that type of competitor," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "I was glad to see that competitiveness come out tonight."

Howard made 16-of-26 shots, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out five assists after entering the contest with a lackluster 14.4 points per game. He managed just nine points, and five rebounds in an 18-point loss to Dallas on Wednesday.

Strickland, who also scored 27 points against Detroit on Saturday, added seven assists and eight rebounds for the Wizards, who had lost five in a row and eight of nine.

"I think Juwan was disappointed about the way he played against Dallas," Heard said. "He didn't have one of his better games, so I thought he would come out and play hard tonight. We wanted to ride him tonight. He was on a roll, and anytime we get a guy like that on a roll, we want to take advantage of him. I thought Rod did a great job of getting him into the plays."

Howard and Strickland combined to score 21 points in the fourth quarter, when Washington outscored Indiana, 36-20, to snap a nine-game losing streak against the Pacers.

Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller scored 21 points apiece for the Pacers, who boast the best home record in the East but are just 1-4 in their last five road games.

The Wizards opened the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, capped by rookie Richard Hamilton's steal and drive for a layup with 9:23 remaining that gave Washington a 96-93 lead, eliciting the loudest roar of the season from the crowd of 17,055 at the MCI Center.

"Let's hope that they come out against New York and do the same thing on Tuesday night because this team will be ready to play," Heard said. "Hopefully, we can get the crowd behind us like we did tonight. I thought the crowd was one of the big reasons we got over the top. I'm sure a lot of them came hoping they would get a glimpse of Michael, but they ended up seeing a great game."

The Wizards shot a season-high 60 percent (51-of-85) and got a career-high 20 points from Michael Smith on 9-for-12 shooting.

"I just got the opportunity to score and took advantage of it tonight," Smith said. "This probably was our best game at home. The fans were into it. Everybody was into it. We just need to sustain this every night. I think the Jordan factor played into it a little bit, but I'm glad it's over with because it was a big distraction. But I think him coming here is going to rub off because he knows how to win, and that's all we need."

Jahidi White added 14 points and six rebounds and also credited Jordan for motivating the Wizards.

"Now that Mike's in here, he brings excitement to the players and the fans," White said. "He brings energy to the whole organization."

Mark Jackson had 13 points and 13 assists and Austin Croshere added 14 points off the bench for the Pacers, who had seven players in double figures but yielded a season high in points. Indiana shot 46 percent (40-of-87).
