Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker scored 21 points apiece as the Boston Celtics took control early and coasted to their season-high fourth straight victory, 111-86 over the Seattle SuperSonics.

The winning streak is Boston's longest since a four-game run from December 15-23, 1997, Rick Pitino's first season as coach. Boston opened this season 3-0.

The defeat snapped a season-high seven-game winning streak for Seattle, which was delayed leaving Milwaukee and did not arrive in Boston until 12:30 p.m. EST due to Thursday night's inclement weather in the Northeast.

"They had a real difficult trip, as the road can be sometimes," Pitino said. "It snowed in Milwaukee and they got in late on a back-to-back game. We got the benefits of that.

"We'll take our wins anyway we can," Pitino continued. "The Sonics take more 3s than anyone in pro basketball and we wanted to choke that down at all costs -- they were 0-of-8 tonight. We play the best against the best."

Boston opened a 28-18 lead after the first quarter as Pierce and Walker combined for 14 points.

"We executed our game plan and a win," Pierce said. "We just keep getting better as a team. Right now we're at four in a row and we've stepped up our basketball."

Seattle got within 39-33 on a runner by Ruben Patterson and Vin Baker's layup kept the SuperSonics close at 45-37 with 4:34 to play. But the Celtics scored the next 11 points to extend the lead to 56-37 at the 1:54 mark. Walker hit a 36-footer at the buzzer to give Boston a 61-41 halftime lead.

The Celtics continued to pour it on in the third quarter while the Sonics were ice cold, making just 6-of-22 shots. Boston took its biggest lead at 84-52 on two free throws by Pierce with 2:26 remaining and led 86-55 entering the the final period.

"If your going to lose, you might as well get blown out," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "We've had it happen to us a few times this year. We just couldn't seem to find anything that would work consistently."

Sonics superstar guard Gary Payton had a lackluster game, scoring 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting with five assists and nine rebounds.

"We just played horrible basketball tonight and we paid the price," Payton said. "They played real well, and we didn't come out to play. Travel is travel in the NBA. We can't really use that as an excuse."

Baker scored 19 points and Rashard Lewis added 14 off the bench for the Sonics, who obviously were affected by their travel problems. They shot just 38 percent (35-of-93) from the field and were outrebounded, 60-42.

"I don't want to make excuses but we got in at 12," Baker said. "We still have to go out like professionals and play the game."

Kenny Anderson scored 19 points and Danny Fortson grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds for Boston, which shot 48 percent (44-of-91).

Celtics forward Calbert Cheaney missed the game to be with his wife, who is expecting a child.
