Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets appear to have gotten back to playing basketball, which they do very well.

Derrick Coleman had 24 points and 11 rebounds and the bench fueled a second-quarter burst that gave the Hornets their fourth straight victory, 110-96 over the Boston Celtics.

One week ago, the Hornets were emotionally spent in a loss at New York. That game came between a memorial service and funeral for guard Bobby Phills, who was killed in an auto accident on January 12.

However, the Hornets have rebounded nicely. Picked by many as the preseason favorite to win the Eastern Conference, Charlotte looked the part tonight, shooting 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field as it improved to 16-2 at home.

"We approach every game the same but we knew tonight we could not get off to a slow start," Coleman said.

Eddie Jones scored 18 points and Elden Campbell added 16 for the Hornets, who had six players in double figures. Brad Miller came off the bench and also scored 16 points.

"Tonight we made the extra passes and got a lot of open looks," Jones said. "Our inside game really sparked us tonight and opened up the perimeter. We played very well defensively."

Anthony Mason had seven points and 11 rebounds while holding Celtics star forward Antoine Walker to 11 points on 5-of-15 shooting.

"I thought we really came out and played well tonight," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "Anthony Mason was absolutely terrific on defense and Derrick Coleman provided a punch when we really needed him. Brad Miller came in to do his job and really gave us a lift."

Vitaly Potapenko had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Danny Fortson added 16 and 10 for the Celtics (19-21), who had a four-game winning streak snapped and failed in a bid to reach .500 for the first time since December 14. Boston also lost swingman Paul Pierce to a leg injury in the second quarter.

The Hornets took the lead for good at 16-13 on a 3-pointer by Jones with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. Coleman scored nine points in the period, which ended with Charlotte holding a 28-19 lead.

The Celtics closed to 32-27 on a basket by Doug Overton with 9:11 left in the second quarter but never got closer. The Hornets broke open the game with a 14-2 burst, fueled by Miller and rookie Baron Davis, who scored five points apiece. A basket by Davis gave Charlotte a 46-29 lead with 5:23 remaining.

Miller scored nine points in the second period, which ended with Charlotte holding a 58-43 lead. Potapenko scored nine points in the third quarter as Boston cut the deficit to 83-71 entering the final period.

A layup by Fortson made it 95-87 with 5:02 remaining before Coleman responded. First, he sank a 3-pointer to rebuild the lead to 11 points. After Fortson dunked, Coleman completed a three-point play to make it 101-89 with 3:48 to go.

"Boston is a tough team to contain for the whole game so we knew we couldn't give them too much momentum," Coleman said.

"We made it close but Derrick Coleman hit a couple of big baskets at the end and got fouled," Celtics guard Kenny Anderson said. "We hustled, but we just didn't get the win."

David Wesley had 12 points and eight assists and Ricky Davis scored 10 points for the Hornets, who held a 28-10 scoring edge from the line and had 31 assists on 39 baskets.

"We are not going to win games when we are shooting 13 to their 37 from the foul line," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said.

Dana Barros scored 14 points and Anderson added 11 and eight assists for the Celtics, who shot 46 percent (42-of-92) but only 2-of-13 from behind the arc.

Boston was denied its first five-game winning streak since March 31-April 9, 1995, the last season it qualified for the playoffs.
