Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Darrell Armstrong had 17 points to lead six players in double figures as the Orlando Magic handed the Los Angeles Clippers their eighth straight defeat, 102-89.

Armstrong hit 8-of-14 from the floor and added six assists for Orlando, which defeated the Clippers for the ninth time in 10 outings, including five in a row at Los Angeles.

"It's nice to get some wins," Armstrong said. "We've been playing really hard, but it's all about getting defensive stops. Sometimes we play hard for 45 or 46 minutes and the last three we disappear on defense.

"Right now, were just happy to finish the road trip like we did -- go back home with a two game win streak and go from there."

The Magic, who defeated Vancouver on Saturday, posted consecutive victories for the first time since a five-game streak in December.

"We've gone out west the last two times and split," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. The first time, we won the first two and this time the last two. I thought we'd be 3-1. I don't think you can have a team with low expectations. You've got to keep raising the bar, you've got to keep challenging them."

Derrick Anderson had 20 points for Los Angeles, which has lost 11 of its last 12 outings.

Orlando, which led 85-75 early in the final quarter, saw its lead trimmed to 85-81 on Lamar Odom's hook shot with 7:27 remaining. But Chris Gatling, who had 11 points and nine rebounds, hit a short jumper and converted a three-point play to build the advantage to 90-81 at the 6:26 mark, effectively ending the Clippers' hopes.

"Turnovers are the thing that will kill you, you've got to be under control," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "It's a simple game. If you get out of control going to the basket, your going to lose games."

"Right now were at the crossroads," said Taylor, referring to his teams' eight-game losing streak. "We can either turn up our play, or not play and tuck it in. I don't know what (the team) wants to do, but I don't want to tuck it in. The losing must stop -- it's not an option. It's been embarrassing from the start, now it's just getting ridiculous."

The game featured nine lead changes and six ties during a hotly contested first half, with Orlando ahead 50-49. The Magic took the lead for good, 48-46, on a 3-pointer by Armstrong with 2:23 remaining.

Odom, who finished with 18 points, hit a short hook shot to keep Los Angeles within 54-53 early in the third quarter. But five different players contributed to a 10-2 Magic run to extend the lead to 64-55 with 7:27 remaining. Orlando led 79-69 entering the final period.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 15 points and Charles Outlaw had 14 and nine rebounds for Orlando, which shot 44 percent (39-of-89) from the floor and allowed only two points off nine turnovers.

Maurice Taylor had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Michael Olowokandi added 12 and 13 for the Clippers, who shot 45 percent (36-of-80) but surrendered 24 points off 18 turnovers.

"The Clippers have some good young talent," Rivers said. The thing that hurts their coaches is they have some free agents, and when you are not committed, it's tough to get a lot out of your guys. Having said that, Maurice Taylor can really play. That guy is an amazing player."
