Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Greg Anthony keyed a fourth-quarter surge and the Portland Trail Blazers recovered from a sluggish first half for a 101-87 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Coming off road wins over Western Conference powers San Antonio and the Los Angeles Lakers in their last two games, the Trail Blazers struggled for the entire first half and trailed by seven points at halftime.

The Nets still led by one early in the fourth quarter before Portland erupted with a 17-2 burst that opened a 90-76 advantage with under seven minutes remaining. Anthony, who backs up Damon Stoudamire, nailed three 3-pointers in the run for his only offense of the night.

Arvydas Sabonis had his way with the Nets' big men, collecting 21 points and 13 rebounds. He did more than enough to help the Blazers improve to 22-4 against New Jersey over the last 13 seasons.

"They played a great first half," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We knew they were capable, they have good offensive players and they have been playing well, but we also helped their cause with some pretty lackluster team play."

Stephon Marbury scored 21 points and handed out nine assists for the Nets, who dropped the opener of a four-game road trip. New Jersey is just 4-14 away from home this season.

Portland rebounded from its poor first half and outscored the Nets, 28-18, in the third quarter to take a 71-68 lead into the final period.

Rasheed Wallace opened the fourth with a thunderous dunk before Lucious Harris nailed consecutive 3-pointers to give New Jersey its last lead, 74-73, with 10:43 remaining.

Harris scored 11 points to lead the reserves for the Nets, who played the much deeper Blazers to a virtual standstill. Portland received 28 points from its bench while the Nets got 27.

Scottie Pippen made a 19-footer to put Portland in front for good before Anthony drilled consecutive 3-pointers and Detlef Schrempf hit a driving layup for an 83-74 advantage with 8:57 to go.

Pippen had a solid all-around game, collecting eight points, 10 assists and six rebounds.

A three-point play by Schrempf with 6:11 to play capped the Blazers' 17-2 spurt and opened a 90-76 cushion. New Jersey got no closer than nine points thereafter.

"That's a fine team. They got those 3s and that got us out of it," Nets coach Don Casey said. "I'd rather be happy and proud that we got the 13-point lead in the first half, but we still lost the game after a good start."

Portland shot an impressive 57 percent in the second half (21-of-37) to finish at 52 percent (40-of-77) for the game. The Blazers also had their way on the boards, managing a 44-31 rebounding advantage.

Sparked by Marbury, the Nets led for much of the first half and took their biggest advantage at 50-37 with 1:53 to play before intermission after the point guard sank a 19-footer. Marbury made 9-of-15 shots in the opening half but missed all six shots thereafter.

Keith Van Horn added 17 points and Kendall Gill 14 for New Jersey, which shot 44 percent (34-of-77) and committed 12 of 18 turnovers in the second half.

"The second half was great. New Jersey came out in the first half and played very well," said Blazers guard Steve Smith, who scored 16 points. "After halftime we knew we had to come out and play harder, and we did. Our defense made them turn the ball over and stop the penetration that they did so well in the first half."
