Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chris Carr is making a case for a longer contract.

Playing under his second 10-day pact, Carr scored 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter as the Chicago Bulls rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit for their third win in four games, 83-82 over the Indiana Pacers.

Chicago used a stifling defensive effort to turn things around in the third quarter, limiting the Pacers to four field goals (4-of-26) while forcing nine turnovers. The Bulls carried a 66-65 lead into the final period and won it when Toni Kukoc made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:59 remaining.

"We really had a nice second half. Chris Carr gave us a lift offensively," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We went with a smaller lineup and struggled on the defensive boards. But I thought our guys were real active. That helped our conversion game."

Elton Brand came within one of a season high with 28 points and fellow rookie Ron Artest added 17 and seven assists for Chicago.

"Elton's play defensively and Ron Artest's emergence as a defender have been real critical," Floyd said. "Just having a few guys healthy and getting them back is important."

The Bulls are 6-4 since Kukoc returned to the lineup on January 5 and moved one-half game ahead of Golden State in the race to avoid the NBA's worst record.

"It was a great win for us. Like I said a couple of days ago, we are feeling pretty confident," said Kukoc, who had 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals. "Any night we can play against any team in the NBA."

Jalen Rose scored 18 points and Mark Jackson had 13 and 12 assists for Indiana, which suffered its season-high third straight loss and has dropped six of 10 since a seven-game winning streak.

"Their intensity on the defensive end came through for them," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We also didn't hit our shots when we had them. Their defense took Reggie (Miller) and (Rik) Smits out of the game. We tried hard, but didn't go to the hole. We had good looks from the outside but just didn't hit the shots."

Indiana still led by 10 points with eight minutes left in the third quarter but made only two field goals the rest of the period as the Bulls chipped away.

Rose's long jumper gave the Pacers a 61-55 lead with 4:13 to go in the third before Chicago closed with an 11-4 burst. Carr made 2-of-4 free throws and drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one point. Artest's follow shot put the Bulls ahead, 62-61, with 2:39 left and they took a 66-65 edge into the final period.

The fourth quarter featured eight ties before Kukoc made 1-of-2 from the line with 1:59 left for the last point. He was only 3-of-11 at the line as Chicago missed 14-of-30 free throws.

"I made it difficult by missing all of the free throws I could, but besides that we played a great game," Kukoc said.

Sam Perkins added 13 points off the bench, but Smits scored eight on 4-of-14 shooting and Miller had six on 3-of-14 from the field while guarded by Randy Brown. Indiana shot 40 percent and made only 12 trips to the line, making 10.

"It wasn't just Randy on defense," Miller said. "He had me catching the ball out farther, which made it harder for me. But I had good looks other times and the shots just didn't go down. We're all disappointed and on a little bit of a slide now. We're playing complacent and not with a sense of urgency."

The Bulls shot 44 percent (33-of-75), despite going 1-of-9 from 3-point range. They ended a six-game losing streak against Indiana.
