Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Rookie Quincy Lewis scored six of his 11 points in the second overtime as the Utah Jazz posted a 105-101 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in a battle of Western Conference division leaders.

John Stockton, who finished one rebound shy of a triple-double, and Lewis opened double overtime with baskets and the Jazz never trailed again as they won their third straight and defeated the Lakers for the first time in three games this season.

"I don't think you want to go around beating yourself on the chest, saying we won," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "I don't think it was a great basketball game from either team's standpoint."

Karl Malone scored 31 points, Stockton had 18 and Bryon Russell 13 for Utah.

"I think when you think back on it, yeah, it was a fun game," Stockton said. "You play a terrific team in double overtime and you come out on top, that's a fun game."

Shaquille O'Neal netted 36 points, Kobe Bryant scored 26 and Glen Rice 20 for the Lakers, who are 2-4 since an NBA season-high 16-game winning streak ended on January 14 in Indiana.

"I don't think we played as smart as we could tonight," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "They were able to sustain energy in this game, especially in that second overtime. I felt we had a chance to win."

Just 14 seconds into the second overtime, Stockton took a feed from Malone and buried a 14-foot jumper from the left corner. After a miss by Los Angeles guard Kobe Bryant, Stockton fed Lewis for a layup with 3:51 left.

"There was a lot of exictement," Lewis said. "You know, the crowd was in it, it was loud. Two great teams battling it out, two overtimes, I couldn't ask for anything more."

The Lakers had a chance to cut the deficit to two with nine seconds to play but Ron Harper connected on just 1-of-2 free-throw attempts. Jeff Hornacek, Stockton and Lewis made two free throws apiece in the final 7.9 seconds to seal it.

Stockton handed out 15 assists, Malone grabbed 13 rebounds and Hornacek scored 11 points for the Jazz, who held a 51-44 advantage on the boards and overcame 27 turnovers by shooting 45 percent (37-of-83) to the Lakers' 41 percent (40-of-98).

The Jazz held a four-point lead with 1:09 left in regulation after a short jumper by Stockton. But Glen Rice made a 21-footer with 56 seconds remaining and Bryant's 13-footer 31 seconds later forced an 81-81 tie.

"They're a different team now than they were back in November," Rice said of the Jazz. "They are playing much better basketball. They're coming out and playing aggressive, they're definitely back to making their crisp pass to one another, and that's something that we have to go out and try to mimic."

Stockton and Malone both were called for traveling during the final 43 seconds of the fourth quarter, preventing the Jazz from winning in regulation.

"I think everybody played really well," Malone said. "I think a lot of guys did a lot of good things for us. It was a nice win for us and now we have to get ready for Vancouver."

During the first overtime, neither team led by more than two points. The Jazz went up, 91-89, on a 3-pointer by Stockton with 34 seconds left. Rice's 10-footer tied it and Malone misfired on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

O'Neal grabbed nine rebounds and Harper handed out eight assists for the Lakers, who were just 3-of-14 from beyond the arc and 18-of-23 at the line.
