Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Brevin Knight erased a whole lot of nothing with a stellar final 17 minutes.

Scoreless through three quarters, the Cleveland point guard scored 16 in the final quarter and overtime as the Cavaliers snapped a five-game losing streak with a 116-107 triumph over the Detroit Pistons, who again played without Grant Hill.

Knight was dominant over the final 10 minutes. He scored eight straight points for the Cavaliers in the stretch of regulation, then added a pair of baskets and an assist as Cleveland began the overtime session with a 10-4 run.

"You play the odds and you don't expect Brevin Knight to make those shots, and he made those shots. You have to give him credit," Pistons guard Jerry Stackhouse said.

Bob Sura scored a career-high 31 points for the Cavaliers, who ended their longest losing streak since a seven-game slide from December 15-26.

"Hopefully, this will be a stepping stone for us," Sura said. "If we can keep doing the little things, we'll be all right. This was a big win, and we have to make a stand before the All-Star break, and try to get ourselves into position to make some noise."

Hill missed his second straight game with a bruised tailbone. The superstar forward is third in the NBA in scoring at 27.3 points per game. Stackhouse led Detroit with 38 points -- establishing a season high for the second straight game -- and Lindsey Hunter added 17.

"I don't care if Grant Hill is gone for a year, we have to go out and play," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "When he gets back, he'll be back. Everyone knows he'll be back as soon as he can. That's a non-issue but from our standpoint. We have to start doing the necessary things to win games."

The Pistons, who have lost five straight games, had two chances to win at the end of regulation but Jud Buechler missed a long 3-pointer with 18 seconds to go and Stackhouse missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer.

"We had our chance," Stackhouse said. "We played terrible in the first half and came back and established ourselves in the second half. We had an opportunity to win the game in regulation."

"No one feels sorry for us," Gentry added. "You have to be mentally tough and physically tough enough in a situation like this when we're struggling. You have to step up and win a game. We have no excuses."

Cleveland led 61-49 following two free throws by Sura with 7:23 to go in the third quarter. But the Pistons outscored the Cavaliers 24-7 over the remainder of the quarter to take a 73-68 lead into the final period.

The Pistons led by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter but a 12-footer by Knight knotted the contest, 85-85, with 5:12 left. He buried a 17-footer and added two free throws with 3:39 remaining.

The Pistons reeled off 11 of the next 15 points and led 96-93 following Stackhouse's dunk off an offensive rebound with 80 seconds to play. Sura answered with a 3-pointer 16 seconds later and the game went to overtime when Buechler and Stackhouse could not convert down the stretch.

Overtime was decided quickly as Sura hit a driving layup, Knight a 10-footer and Lamond Murray a 3-pointer in the opening two minutes. Detroit battled back within 105-100 but Knight drained a 14-footer and Murray had a three-point play 18 seconds apart.

Sura scored 10 points in the opening quarter as Cleveland took a 26-21 lead. The Cavaliers led by 19 points with 3:20 left in the first half but Detroit closed with an 8-3 burst to trail 53-39 at the break.

Sura was 7-of-12 from the field with four assists and three steals in the half.

Terry Mills had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Detroit.
