Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell collected 20 points and 13 assists as the Milwaukee Bucks took control late in the second quarter and cruised to a 112-104 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Cassell ignited a 16-2 run covering the last two minutes of the first half and the opening moments of the third quarter to break open a close game and help the Bucks snap a two-game skid.

The Bucks also received major contributions from big men Ervin Johnson and Scott Williams, who combined for 29 points and 29 rebounds, adding a vital inside presence. Williams had 17 points and 14 boards and Johnson added 12 and 15.

"The big men were great. They are a big foundation for us," Bucks coach Gearge Karl said. The defense and rebounding have been first class. Now Scotty is getting more touches, better looks and better shots."

"Ervin and I talked about doing a better job on the glass," said Williams. "The last time against them, they pounded us. I think he and I have good chemistry together. When our shooters don't make the shots, it's the big men's job to rebound and get a second chance."

Cassell had eight points and six assists in a second quarter which saw the Bucks shoot 74 percent (14-of-19) and open an 11-point halftime lead.

Vlade Divac's tip-in off a miss by Chris Webber kept Sacramento within 54-50 with 2:05 left in the second quarter. Milwaukee closed with a 9-2 run to take a 63-52 lead at halftime and picked up where it left off by scoring the first seven points of the third period to open a 70-52 advantage, putting the pressure on the scrambling Kings.

The Bucks led by as many as 19 points in the final quarter as the lead did not dip below double figures until the final minute.

Ray Allen added 22 points and nine rebounds and Glenn Robinson scored 21 points for the Bucks, who shot 44 percent (40-of-90) from the field and had 12 steals.

"I think we've lost five or six games we should have won," Allen said. "We could be a lot better right now, but that's part of the learning process. We're a young team and we're working on those things. It's interesting to see our growth."

Webber was ejected during a sequence midway through the third period which saw Vlade Divac and coach Rick Adelman also receive tecnicals. He had trouble finding his rhythm and finished with just 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting and eight rebounds.

"That's the first time I've ever got thrown out of a game so I really don't know what to say," said Webber, who scored 30 points in Tuesday's win at Charlotte. "I'm more upset with the loss than anything. Give them credit, they were better tonight."

Nick Anderson stayed hot with 24 points for Sacramento, which shot 39 percent (38-of-97) from the floor and 59 percent (17-of-29) from the line as it fell to 1-1 on its eight-game road trip.

Divac finished with 11 points and 12 boards and Jason Williams had 11 and 11 assists for the Kings, who lost for only the second time in their last 10 games and were thwarted in an attempt to reach .500 on the road.

Anderson scored 10 points and Allen seven as the teams battled to a 28-28 deadlock after 12 minutes.
