Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Grant Hill came back, but the Detroit Pistons didn't.

Hill scored 28 points as he returned to the lineup following a two-game absence but the Pistons could not overcome a big third quarter by David Wesley as the Charlotte Hornets cruised to a 117-102 victory.

Hill suffered a bruised tailbone late in the first half of a loss at Chicago on Saturday and sat out setbacks to Dallas and Cleveland. The superstar forward made 9-of-19 shots and 9-of-9 free throws in his return but could not prevent the Pistons (21-21) from falling to .500 with their sixth straight loss, their longest skid since April 1998.

"I did not have a lot of spring, not a lot of explosion," Hill said. "I was not 100 percent, just trying to get healthy."

"Grant Hill is hurt but he played and gave 99 percent," Pistons coach Alvin Gentry said. "There are not many guys you can count on to do that."

Wesley scored 11 of his 24 points in the final 4:09 of the third quarter as the Hornets broke open a close game and won for the fifth time in six contests. Eddie Jones scored 25 points and Derrick Coleman added 24 for Charlotte, which shot 52 percent (46-of-88) from the field.

"We try to play an inside-outside game all the time and tonight we were very successful in establishing that early," Jones said. "All of our big men demand a double-team and that really opens things up on the perimeter. We were able to knock them down tonight."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 34 points for the Pistons, who shot 47 percent (35-of-74) but got just 10 points from their bench. Detroit surrendered at least 110 points for the 12th time this season.

"If it doesn't change we're gonna have to slow the tempo down," Gentry said. "We're not playing very smart and getting outrebounded and teams are shooting over 50 percent on us. We've got to play better defense to win games."

"When we play teams that run a lot, we have to match their energy," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "I thought we ran the floor extremely well tonight."

The Hornets took the lead for good at 75-72 on a 3-pointer by Wesley with 4:09 left in the third quarter. Stackhouse's free throw cut the deficit to 79-78 with 2:20 left before Wesley took over.

The 6-1 guard responded with another 3-pointer and Anthony Mason made a corner jumper before Wesley again struck from behind the arc for an 87-78 lead with 1:21 remaining. He added a pair of free throws with 54 seconds left as Hill took a breather and Elden Campbell closed the quarter with a jumper at the horn to give Charlotte a 91-78 lead.

"It's perplexing. We have a lot of good athletes but we just have to focus more as a team," Hill said. "In this league you have to defend, and take some pride."

Brad Miller, who had 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench, capped the 14-0 burst with two foul shots to open the scoring in the final period. Hill returned a minute later but managed just six points the rest of the way as Detroit got no closer than 12 points.

Mason scored nine points and Campbell eight for Charlotte, which held a 44-34 rebounding edge and scored 30 points off 21 Detroit turnovers.

"Our second team was playing with a lot of energy tonight and gave our starters a big boost," Miller said. "We were able to get a lot of rebounds tonight."

Terry Mills scored 11 points and Christian Laettner added 10 for the Pistons, who made 8-of-16 3-pointers and 24-of-29 free throws.

Stackhouse and Coleman, former teammates in Philadelphia, scored 10 points each in the first quarter as Detroit grabbed a 31-29 lead. The Pistons widened the advantage to five points before Jones, who also had seven steals, scored 10 points in a 13-0 burst that gave the Hornets a 43-35 lead with 7:04 left in the second quarter.

"I did some things defensively that got us out in transition and led to some easy baskets," Jones said.

Charlotte led 59-54 at halftime.
