Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Tony Battie sank a 12-footer with 15 seconds remaining, helping the Boston Celtics snap a three-game losing streak with a 91-88 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Swingman Paul Pierce, back in the lineup after missing three games with a pulled left hamstring, passed to Battie, who drove the right side of the lane before hitting a jumper that put Boston ahead, 89-88.

"It's been since college since I hit a game-winning shot," said Battie. "I couldn't tell you how long. It was just one of those plays that happens sometimes. Paul drove and drew a double-team and he got it to me. The prime play was for Paul, the secondary play was for me."

"Tee (Battie) came down and our guys were running all over the place. Somehow he got open," said Phoenix coach Scott Skiles. "We just weren't there tonight."

Phoenix had a chance to regain the lead but Kenny Anderson intercepted a pass from Jason Kidd and Adrian Griffin sank two free throws with four seconds to go for the final margin. A potential tying 3-point heave by Rex Chapman was way off at the buzzer.

"The key there for me was not to give Kidd a good look at the floor, that's what I was trying to guard against," Anderson said. "I was real happy to make a big play there we needed it. We needed a stop."

Pierce scored 31 points and Antoine Walker added 24 for the Celtics, who improved to 16-6 at home. The Celtics are 1-12 over the last two seasons without Pierce, their 1998 first-round pick.

Clifford Robinson scored 37 points and Penny Hardaway added 18 for the Suns, who fell to 14-3 against the Eastern Conference and 1-2 on their road trip. Chapman scored 12 points, making 4-of-8 shots in 23 minutes off the bench. His 15-footer gave the Suns their last lead at 89-88 with 33 seconds to go.

"We didn't come to play," Skiles said. "We didn't play hard. In the second half some guys played harder but there were too many mistakes in our execution. We weren't where we had to be right from the jump ball."

The Suns shot just 39 percent (31-of-80) from the floor. Robinson made 13-of-23 shots but was just 1-of-4 in the fourth quarter. He made a 3-pointer that tied it, 84-84, with 3:43 left. Tom Gugliotta, who had six points and seven rebounds, made a 16-footer to give Phoenix an 86-84 edge with 3:07 to play.

"We tried to get some of the other guys involved in the fourth quarter," Robinson said. "The game could have easily went our way but it didn't. So we just have to get ready for tomorrow."

Pierce converted a three-point play to put Boston ahead 87-86 with 2:39 remaining. Each teams had two empty possessions before Chapman's basket.

Pierce scored 17 points in 17 minutes in the first half as Boston took a 49-46 lead into the locker room. The Suns outscored the Celtics, 28-26, in the third period with Robinson -- who scored a league season-high 50 points earlier this month -- hitting 7-of-8 shots from the field, including a 3-pointer.
