Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers' best medicine for a rare two-game losing streak turned out to be a team they have defeated nine straight times.

Shaquille O'Neal scored 30 points and Kobe Bryant added 23 as the Los Angeles Lakers held the Milwaukee Bucks without a basket for over 14 minutes in a 117-89 victory.

The Lakers used a 35-9 run over 14:25 of the second half to open a 108-77 cushion with 5:33 left and won their eighth straight home meeting with the Bucks. Bryant scored seven points in that spurt and Derek Fisher and rookie Devean George added six each.

"In the third quarter I thought we were going to fall back into the malaise that we had in the first 18 minutes of the first half," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We found a way to jump-start a little bit in the middle of the third quarter."

Milwaukee missed 14 straight shots during that stretch and shot just 28 percent (11-of-40) in the second half. The Bucks shot 38 percent (34-of-89) overall and made just 4-of-15 3-pointers.

"We got beat every way you could get beat," Bucks coach George Karl said. "Energy-wise we didn't have a lot of bounce, they had extra possessions, they had the hustle game going their way and, in general, they just whipped us."

Glen Rice added 19 points and Ron Harper dished out a season-high 10 assists for the Lakers, who improved to 40-9 at home against the Bucks all-time and are 13-3 overall in the series since the 1991-92 season.

The Lakers improved to 14-4 when O'Neal scores at least 30 points and became the first NBA team to win 20 home games this season (20-4). They lead the Portland Trail Blazers by 1 1/2 games for the best mark in the league.

"We played a better game in the second half," O'Neal said. "We were just trying to get back on track. We had to move the ball better and play better defense."

Los Angeles outscored Milwaukee 58-30 in points in the paint and avoided its first three-game skid since April 21-26. The Lakers outscored the Bucks 50-34 in the second half, including 27-14 in the fourth quarter.

O'Neal scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting in the first half, when Los Angeles shot 66 percent and raced to a 67-55 lead. Overall, O'Neal made 13-of-18 shots in just 33 minutes and Bryant sank 8-of-15 as the Lakers shot 53 percent (45-of-85) overall.

Sam Cassell scored 18 points, Vinny Del Negro added 15 and Ray Allen 14 for the Bucks, who fell for the third time in four games.

"They showed why they have the best record in the league," Cassell said. "We missed some shots and they came down and executed what they needed to do. It was their night tonight."

O'Neal scored 11 points during a 13-0 run as the Lakers opened a 64-50 lead with a minute left before halftime.
