Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones led five players in double figures with 20 points as the Charlotte Hornets cruised to their sixth win in seven games, a 100-79 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Jones, playing his usual stellar all-around game, added four steals and six assists as the Hornets improved to 18-3 at Charlotte Coliseum, tying Indiana for the most home wins in the Eastern Conference.

"We played well tonight," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We got production from a lot of people. We had a lot of inside production and Eddie started stealing the ball."

Phoenix trailed by 16 points late in the third quarter but cut the deficit to 73-64 on a basket by Tom Gugliotta with 10:43 to play.

However, Jones scored seven points during a 9-0 run that rebuilt the lead to 82-64 at the 8:27 mark and the Suns got no closer than 12 points thereafter.

The loss marked the first time this season the Suns have dropped consecutive games to the Eastern Conference. Phoenix, which lost at Boston on Friday, fell to 14-4 against the East and 1-3 on a five-game road trip which ends in Orlando on Monday.

"I am speechless right now," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "Our execution is not good. The more we work on it, the worse it gets. We have to regroup. There's only one way to go from here, and that's up."

The Suns have lost five straight on the road to Charlotte, with their last win coming on March 16, 1995.

Derrick Coleman scored 19 points, Anthony Mason added 15 and Brad Miller 13 and 12 rebounds off the bench for Charlotte, which shot 48 percent (38-of-80) from the field and held a commanding 51-31 advantage on the boards.

"Brad has a nose for the ball and he is relentless," Silad said. "He never gives up and he can run the court. Twelve rebounds in 25 minutes is pretty good production."

The Hornets travel to Houston for the start of a three-game road trip on Tuesday. Charlotte is only 6-15 away from home.

"We need to keep playing solid basketball on our road trip, Silas added. "It is mental with us on the road. We think we have to play great but we don't, we just have to be consistent. With Eddie back in the lineup, we can win games that we didn't on our last trip."

Penny Hardaway led Phoenix with 24 points and Cliff Robinson added 15 but only two in the second half. The Suns shot 40 percent (31-of-78) and committed 20 turnovers.

"We're breaking down at crucial points in the game," said Gugliotta, who had 13 points and 11 rebounds. "We're not matching up on transition defense and giving teams too many easy baskets."

The Suns led 30-25 after the first quarter. Charlotte scored 10 straight points to open the second period and took a 52-47 advantage into halftime.

Hardaway's basket to start the second half cut the deficit to 52-49, but Coleman and Mason scored seven points to spark an 11-0 run midway through the period, giving the Hornets a 63-69 advantage. Charlotte led 73-62 entering the fourth quarter.
