Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Maurice Taylor hit the go-ahead basket with 1:55 remaining as the Los Angeles Clippers snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 98-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets, who suffered their third straight last-second loss.

In a game that featured 10 ties and 24 lead changes, including 10 in the final period, Taylor put Los Angeles ahead for good with an eight-foot hook. After New Jersey's Keith Van Horn missed a 3-pointer, Stephon Marbury fouled Derek Anderson, who sank two free throws with 1:37 left to give the Clippers a 92-89 advantage.

The Nets pulled within one point on Kerry Kittles' nine-footer with 1:17 left and Clippers rookie Lamar Odom failed to convert on the other end. But Marbury missed a 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining and Van Horn lost the rebound out of bounds.

Taylor hit a long jumper with 30 seconds left to make it 94-91. After Kittles hit a 19-footer with 22 seconds to go, Anderson made two free throws. Marbury dribbled below and above the arc and rose for a shot but threw a bad pass. Odom dribbled into the frontcourt and threw a lob pass that Tyrone Nesby turned into a spectacular alley-oop dunk with 1.3 seconds left.

"It was a great win, it was a long time in coming," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "I hope the next one doesn't take as long. We've been struggling, everybody knows it, but tonight everybody played tough."

Taylor collected 23 points and eight rebounds, Odom added 21 and 10 and Michael Olowokandi grabbed 13 boards for the Clippers, who won for the first time since defeating Indiana on January 8. Los Angeles has won only twice in its last 16 games.

"We stayed in our offense," Ford said. "(Point guard Eric) Murdock did a great job throughout the course of the evening. We controlled the flow offensively and defensively. And Michael did a great job protecting the basket on their penetration plays. He had four blocks and changed an awful lot of shots as their guys attacked the rim."

Kittles scored 24 points and Marbury added 23 and seven assists for New Jersey, which finished its four-game road trip without a win and has dropped its last six road contests. On this trip, the Nets lost on buzzer shots in Seattle and Vancouver and fell to 4-17 away from home this season.

"I tried to get myself in a good position to make the jump shot but Odom and Taylor guarded me well," said Marbury, who was held to four points in the first half. "I came out trying to get into a groove. They did a good job clogging up the paint. When we lose it's very, very upsetting. We've got to come back and establish ourselves."

The game was tied at 21-21 after the first quarter. Los Angeles held only a 43-42 advantage at intermission and a three-point lead after three periods.

"It was just a good thing that we were able to do it at home tonight," Odom said. "It was fun. We've got the day off tomorrow and we'll get to rest. It was a big win, but we really have got to approach it as just another game. We've got to come right back and play another one just like this."

Van Horn's 3-pointer snapped a 71-71 tie with 9:37 left and, after a missed basket by Taylor, Marbury made a running jumper to push New Jersey's lead to five points. Johnny Newman hit a 3-pointer with 2:41 left as the Nets took their last lead, 89-88.

Anderson scored 18 points and Murdock tied a season high with 16 while dishing out a season-best 10 assists for the Clippers, who shot nearly 51 percent (40-for-79) from the field and owned a 44-36 rebounding edge.

Van Horn had 11 points and Jamie Feick 10 for New Jersey, which shot 41 percent (36-for-88) but was outscored in the paint, 60-34. The Clippers also led in fast-break points, 31-10.

"We were confident in tonight's game but we just have to play better basketball," Kittles said. "When we play well we get to the free-throw line. When we play poorly we wind up taking too many jump shots. We've got to get the paint more to get to the free-throw line."
