Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Penny Hardaway made a triumphant return to Orlando.

In his first game against his former team, Hardaway scored 21 points as the Phoenix Suns nearly blew a big second-half lead before holding on for a 117-113 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Hardaway, who was booed throughout, spent his first six seasons with the Magic, leading them to five playoff appearances and the 1995 Eastern Conference title. He was dealt to Phoenix in August for Danny Manning, Pat Garrity and two first-round picks.

"It didn't surprise me at all," Hardaway said of the negative reaction he received. "It is all part of the game. I just wanted to play basketball and try not to do anything different. We came to get a win.

"I do regret some things that I said because you can't just say them. I did apologize for those things and they still didn't matter."

Hardaway played 40 minutes, connecting on 5-of-14 shots from the field and 11-of-14 free-throw attempts while adding four assists and four rebounds.

"I was not surprised because I knew it was going to happen," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "Without Penny Hardaway there is no championship in Orlando, so you can't get pass that."

Cliff Robinson did his best to upstage Hardaway, scoring 22 of his 28 points in the second half for Phoenix, which led by as many as 25 in the third quarter but had the lead sliced to two in the final minutes.

Jason Kidd collected 20 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Suns, who concluded a 2-3 road trip.

"I'm just glad that we got that one," Kidd said. "We played great for 3 1/2 quarters. We relaxed when we got up by 20 and they made a run. We were supposed to win this game. They play loosey-goosey. We have to walk out there with a swagger and confidence like we are going to go out there and dominate the ballgame. We are a veteran team."

Darrell Armstrong scored 26 points and Tariq Abdul-Wahad 19 for Orlando, which lost for only the second time in its last six games.

The game also was a homecoming for Suns coach Scott Skiles, who spent part of his playing career in Orlando. He received a much different reception than Hardaway.

"That was nice. I'm flattered by that," Skiles said. "I always look forward to coming home. I have nothing but fond memories. The people here have always been great to me, so it was great."

The backcourt duo of Kidd and Hardaway was a big difference in the first half, combining for 27 points and helping the Suns build a 62-50 halftime advantage. Phoenix shot 59 percent (24-of-41) in the first half and 54 percent (42-of-78) overall.

After the guards did the damage in the first half, Robinson stepped up in the third quarter, scoring 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Phoenix took its biggest lead, 81-56, with 5:40 left in the third period on a 17-footer by Tom Gugliotta, who finished with 17 points. The Suns carried a seemingly safe 93-74 advantage into the final 12 minutes.

The Suns still had a 10-point bulge with 5:42 left after Hardaway sank two free throws. But Orlando answered with a 10-2 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer by Armstrong, to close to 108-106 with 2:11 to play. Armstrong scored 12 points in the quarter.

Todd Day made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:50 left for a three-point lead and Gugliotta grabbed the miss, moved to the baseline and sank a jumper for a 111-106 advantage with 1:35 to go.

A 3-pointer by Chucky Atkins with 22 second left pulled the Magic within 116-113. However, Kidd made 1-of-2 from the line one second later to seal the win.

Rookie Corey Maggette added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Orlando, which shot 48 percent (46-of-95) and was outrebounded, 40-37.
