Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Toni Kukoc scored 31 points and rookie Ron Artest had 14 of his career high-tying 24 in the fourth quarter as the Chicago Bulls snapped a four-game losing streak with an 88-81 triumph over the Seattle SuperSonics.

Vin Baker tipped in Emanual Davis' miss with 52 seconds left to pull the SuperSonics within 80-78. But Elton Brand, who today was named NBA Rookie of the Month, hit a short jumper with 31 seconds left to restore the four-point cushion.

Chicago's Dickey Simpkins took a charge from Gary Payton with 29 seconds left. Payton's arguing earned him a technical foul as Artest made three free throws, including two after he was fouled to stop the clock two seconds later.

Davis drilled a 3-pointer to pull the SuperSonics within 85-81 with 22 seconds left. But Randy Brown's free throw and Artest's dunk closed the scoring as the Bulls won for just the second time in their last six visits to Seattle.

Artest converted 10-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter and 12-of-13 overall for Chicago, which moved to 1-1 on its six-game road trip. The Bulls converted 18-of-24 free throws while the Sonics managed just 7-of-12.

"Ron Artest stepped up and knocked some down," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We got into a lot of iso situations and drew some fouls late. We really won this one at the foul line."

Kukoc shot 13-of-21 from the floor and fell two points shy of his season high. Simpkins grabbed 10 rebounds as Chicago posted a 39-34 advantage, including 16-9 on the offensive end.

"(Kukoc) was aggressive going to the rim tonight," Floyd added. "He got himself to the post early on and established a post position. He also got himself back to the line."

The Bulls shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Sonics 31-19. They shot 44 percent (34-of-77) overall and won their third road game in six tries after opening the season 0-15 outside of Chicago.

Vin Baker scored 19 points and Brent Barry added 13 for the Sonics, who could not build off Tuesday's win against Utah and fell for the second time in three games.

"This one's not good," said Barry, a former Bull. "They're trying to hold the game somewhere in the 80s and giving themselves a chance to win. They've been playing well and we just didn't come with the effort after (Tuesday's) big win."

Payton added 12 points and 10 assists, but shot just 5-of-18 from the floor while being guarded by Artest as Seattle was 34-of-73 (46 percent) overall.

"I liked getting after Payton and using my speed because he is a great player," Artest said. "He's not going to have many games like that."

"We were just sleepwalking in the first half," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "It was just pathetic. They had 13 offensive rebounds and we had one. We let Kukoc get started and we couldn't cool them off after that. They established the pace of play and we couldn't break out of that."

Barry nailed a pair of 3-pointers during a 10-2 spurt as the Sonics opened a 52-46 lead with 7:55 left in the third quarter. Barry finished 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Artest helped the Bulls climb back with six points in a 12-3 run as they gained a 77-72 lead with 3:22 left. Brown, Kukoc and former Sonic Hersey Hawkins each added two points in that burst.
