Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Maybe interim coach Jim Todd is beginning to understand what Chris Ford already knew -- it's going to take a lot more than a coaching change to turn around the Los Angeles Clippers.

Rookie Elton Brand scored seven of his 21 points down the stretch as the Chicago Bulls overcame a sluggish start to earn a 100-90 victory over the woeful Clippers.

Todd, an assistant with Los Angeles since 1998, took over Thursday when Ford was dismissed following an 11-34 start. The change made little difference as the Clippers fell for the 14th time in 15 games and dropped into a tie with Chicago for last place in the league.

After committing 10 turnovers and shooting 35 percent to fall into a 29-13 hole after 12 minutes, Chicago shot 60 percent (32-of-53) thereafter to improve to 2-2 on its six-game road trip.

"We really settled down after the first quarter," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "Our ball movement in the final three quarters was the best its been. The guys are growing and I think it's because of all the minutes they've played up to this point in the season."

Brand connected on a seven-footer to give the Bulls an 83-79 lead with 5:25 to play. After Clippers forward Maurice Taylor replied with a jump hook, Randy Brown hit 1-of-2 free throws and Brand converted a three-point play to extend the lead to 87-81 at the 4:17 mark.

Brand answered another jump hook by Taylor with two free throws and Toni Kukoc added two of his own to give Chicago a 91-83 advantage with 3:25 remaining.

Los Angeles crawled within 91-86 when Troy Hudson followed a free throw by Taylor with a layup, but Hersey Hawkins put the final dagger in the Clippers with a 3-pointer from the left sideline, making the score 94-86 with 2:09 left.

Brand severely outdueled fellow rookie Lamar Odom, who scored only four points and had two rebounds in 26 non-descript minutes.

"I didn't want to make this a personal matchup," said Brand, referring to Odom - his main competition for Rookie of the Year honors along with Houston guard Steve Francis. "We just tried to win the game and we did that."

Kukoc, who finished with 20 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds, scored eight during a 17-4 Chicago run which cut a 39-25 deficit to 43-42 with 1:31 left in the second quarter.

"I guess we weren't ready to execute in the first quarter," Kukoc said. "When we get into our halfcourt game, we do much better."

The Clippers clung to a 55-52 lead on a slam by Derek Anderson with 8:38 left in the third quarter. But Ron Artest drained two 3-pointers and a free throw during a 14-2 run, as the Bulls took advantage of five Los Angeles turnovers over that span to take a 66-57 lead with 2:55 left. Chicago took a 72-63 advantage into the final quarter.

"They started doing to us in the second half what we did to them in the first," Anderson said. "We're going to have to work it out in practice. In this league, you can't be content with losing."

"Our achilles heel is getting the ball into our offense," Todd said. "When we get out of that, we do not play well. I have to take a look at it. The ball gets into a few hands and they take the shots. I have to get it through to them to move the ball around."

Taylor collected 23 points and Hudson added 19 and eight assists of the bench for the Clippers, who shot 49 percent (37-of-75) from the floor and had only 24 rebounds, compared to 36 for Chicago.

Artest had 16 points while Hawkins and Chris Carr had 10 apiece for the Bulls, who shot 54 percent (38-of-70) and reached the 100-point mark for only the second time this season.
