Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Maybe the Dallas Mavericks do not need Dennis Rodman after all.

Michael Finley scored 23 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Mavericks held on for their seventh victory in eight games, 103-99 over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Finley added eight rebounds and five assists in 52 minutes for Dallas (20-27), which eclipsed last season's win total (19-31) and has won three straight road contests for the first time since March 22-30, 1995.

"Coach just kept calling my number," Finley said. "I kept coming through. When the coaching staff has that much confidence in you and my teammates as well, it just makes it that much easier to go out there and play my game."

"I think tonight proved what we've seen all season," Steve Nash said of Finley. "He's got lots of confidence. He's got a big heart. He's a great player and finds a way to get better and better."

Finley rebounded his own missed shot with 47 seconds left in overtime and was fouled. Sixteen seconds later, he buried a jumper left for a 97-93 lead.

Vancouver's Grant Long threw a poor inbounds pass that Shawn Bradley intercepted. Finley drained two free throws with 23 seconds remaining for a six-point cushion.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim drilled a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left and Finley added two more foul shots for a five-point lead. After Michael Dickerson's 3-pointer brought Vancouver within 101-99, Nash hit two free throws with five seconds left to close the scoring.

Finley scored eight points in the extra session, including six free throws for Dallas, which converted all eight of its foul shots. Finley was 12-of-31 from the floor and 9-of-9 from the line overall.

"I think they're playing great and we're playing at the best level we've played at in a long time and it was quite a game," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I was proud to be a part of it whether we won or loss."

The Mavericks only shot 39 percent (35-of-89) from the field, but were 9-of-17 from beyond the arc and 83 percent (24-of-29) from the line.

The Grizzlies forced overtime when Dickerson drilled a jumper with 7.4 seconds remaining for a 91-91 tie. Dickerson, who finished with 14 points, had been 1-of-13 from the floor before that shot.

"I thought we hung tough and scratched and clawed and we worked our way back into the ball game in the second half," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "I was proud of the way our guys played."

Finley missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer of regulation after there were six lead changes in the final three minutes.

Nash scored a career-high 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 14 for the Mavericks, who are 7-1 at GM Place and 14-3 all-time against the Grizzlies.

Rodman, who signed with Dallas on Thursday, was in Honolulu attending parties around the NFL's Pro Bowl. The flamboyant forward is expected to join the club Wednesday against Seattle.

Abdur-Rahim had a season-high 36 points and a career-best 22 rebounds for Vancouver, which has lost three of its last four games. He was 13-of-25 from the field and helped the Grizzlies shoot 42 percent (37-of-89) overall.

"It was a crazy game, the way they played," Abdur-Rahim said. "They mixed it up and ran different matchups. They got a lot of guys that can play and we've got a lot of guys that can play."
