Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- John Amaechi scored a career-high 25 points as the Orlando Magic raced to an early lead and coasted to a 120-100 triumph over the Golden State Warriors.

Amaechi surpassed his previous best of 19 points by halftime, scoring 23 as the Magic seized a 66-44 lead at the break. Orlando has won seven straight at home against the Warriors since a 122-114 defeat on February 3, 1992.

"I felt pretty good today," said Amaechi, who scored 19 against Indiana on Saturday. "There's always things you can work on. But I'm generally happy with the way things went out tonight."

"He averages seven-eight points, I could be mistaken," said Warriors assistant coach Rod Higgins, filling in for coach Gary St. Jean, who was ejected after arguing a call. "Anytime you have a guy score his career high in the first half, you know that he's not accustomed to scoring a lot of points."

The loss ended Golden State's chance to win three consecutive road games, a feat they have not achieved since December 1994. They are a dismal 5-16 away from home this season.

Orlando seized control from the opening tip, outscoring the Warriors 27-9 over the first nine minutes. Amaechi scored 13 points in the run as the Magic led 33-18 at the end of the quarter.

Michael Doleac netted 23 points off the bench for Orlando, which has won three straight and has gone 7-2 since a season-high eight-game losing streak.

"I got a lot of open looks, a lot of easy post catches," Doleac said. "I think the more important part was that the team played good defense, the team was looking to run. Everyone just played hard and when that happens, you get open looks. Tonight, I was fortunate that I was getting a lot of open looks."

The Magic scored 10 straight points in the third quarter to take their biggest lead of the contest, 90-59, with 2:12 to go. They would only record two points the rest of the period, but still maintained a 92-68 advantage.

"We never let up," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "We scored 120 points, I think we had 40 points off our fast break and basically off our defense. I think in the last three or four games we really hit a nice stretch defensively, which scored us a lot of points."

Golden State got within 112-97 with a 10-0 run of its own but Orlando scored eight of the final 11 points to account for the final margin.

Ron Mercer scored 18 points in his second start since being acquired from Denver and Monty Williams added 12. Orlando shot 58 percent (46-of-80) from the floor, hit 25-of-31 free throws and held a 44-41 rebounding edge.

Antawn Jamison scored 22 points while Vonteego Cummings added 19 points for the Warriors, who shot just 42 percent (39-of-92) from the field. It was the second consecutive night Golden State suffered a 20-point defeat.

"If you look at their team, they are a very talented team," Jamison said. "A lot of people said that because they did not have a "superstar" that could carry the team. They don't have any kind of attitude whatsoever. When you play against them, you have to be ready to play."

Before the game, the Magic became the 20th NBA team to play in an arena featuring corporate sponsorship. Orlando announced that they have come to a five-year agreement with TD Price Waterhouse and will have the Orlando Arena renamed the TD Waterhouse Centre.
