Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors finally won a home game against the Atlanta Hawks as All-Star Vince Carter scored 36 points and Muggsy Bogues handed out a season-high 12 assists off the bench in a 109-88 romp.

Carter, not bothered by three stitches on his left index finger, sank 14-of-27 shots from the floor and made all four of his free throws to help Toronto win for the first time in nine home meetings with Atlanta. The 6-7 Carter cut his finger in a weightlifting accident on Monday and wore a small bandage on it.

"I didn't think about the finger at all, I just went out and played hard," Carter said. "If it's not broken than I am going to give it my all. I came out and hit some shots. I even made a lefthanded layup and that's when I knew I was all right."

The Raptors, who entered the NBA in 1995 and never have made the playoffs, improved to 2-16 all-time against their Central Division rivals. They avenged a 107-89 loss to Atlanta on November 30.

"Mentally, we were much better than the last home game against Atlanta," said Toronto coach Butch Carter. "We got on the same page early tonight. We were aggressive to the ball and you have to like what you saw from the guys tonight. We have the third-best road record in the East and the sixth-best home record. We're trying to get that cleaned up."

Doug Christie scored 16 points and Dell Curry added 14 for Toronto, which shot 48 percent (45-of-94) from the floor and 13-of-13 from the line. The Raptors (26-20) moved into a tie with the Charlotte Hornets for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

"Sometimes, you play to the level of your opponent, and certain teams will have your number," Christie said. "Atlanta always shoots well against us, but tonight, we just came out and were aggressive. Sometimes you get lax when you play at home and you don't have the same intensity as you do on the road. This is a learning process for us, to win at home."

Bogues and the Raptors took care of the ball, matching a teamlow with just five turnovers and recording 35 assists. The Raptors are 19-0 when scoring at least 100 points.

All-Star Dikembe Mutombo led Atlanta with 22 points and 15 rebounds and Isaiah Rider added 12 points. Mutombo was 6-of-7 from the floor but the rest of the Hawks shot just 38 percent (26-of-68). Atlanta made only 1-of-11 3-pointers.

"We played very poorly," Mutombo said. "We didn't come out with a state of urgency. We tried to let the game come to us. They just went on scoring and scoring and we couldn't get back into it. We didn't pound the ball inside in the second half."

Toronto swingman Tracy McGrady sat out with a stomach virus. The 6-8 McGrady warmed up but left the floor and was not in uniform.

Carter scored 20 points in the first half as the Raptors opened a 54-48 advantage. They began the third period with a 21-4 run to push the bulge to 75-52 on Antonio Davis' 15-footer with 5:02 left. Carter scored 10 points in the burst, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Atlanta got no closer than 20 points in the fourth period and Toronto's largest lead was 103-72 on a hook shot by John Thomas with with 4:48 to play.

The Hawks had won five or their last seven games but fell 5 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta has mot missed the playoffs since 1992.
