Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Grizzlies bring out the best in Luc Longley.

Longley scored a season-high 20 points as the Phoenix Suns continued their dominance over the Grizzlies by coasting to a 94-76 victory.

Longley came into the contest averaging just over six points per game but for the second time this season he found a team he could handle offensively. Longley, who connected on 9-of-14 shots from the field, surpassed his previous season high of 15 against Vancouver on January 12.

"It was a good night for me. I was just trying to get a lot of good looks," Longley said. "I got some great feeds down low from some guys for some easy baskets. That always gets you going and gets your confidence going."

Penny Hardaway added 13 points and eight rebounds for Phoenix, which has won both meetings from the Grizzlies this season and nine in a row overall since in a 121-107 home loss on April 19, 1997. The Suns lead the all-time series, 15-2.

Phoenix also improved to 20-5 at home. In last season's lockout-shortened campaign, the Suns went just 15-10 at America West Arena.

"A lot of good signs tonight. There was excellent ball movement, particularly early in the game," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "There were a lot of unselfish plays. We wanted to keep them under 80 and did."

Phoenix improved to 23-0 all-time when holding opponents under 80 points.

Michael Dickerson scored 19 points to lead the Grizzlies, who failed in their bid to win their franchise-record seventh road game. Vancouver is 6-16 on the road, tying its 1996-97 mark for road wins.

"That wasn't a very inspiring effort tonight," Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins said. "We came out and played soft. We played scared. We weren't aggressive. We just didn't compete. We were soft offensively and defensively."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, had a dunk with 1:45 to play in the third quarter that pulled the Grizzlies within 71-62, but that was as close as they got.

Hardaway converted a three-point play and Tom Gugliotta hit a 16-footer to close the period. Rodney Rogers scored four straight points and Cliff Robinson made two free throws to open the fourth quarter, giving the Suns their biggest lead at 82-62 with 9:08 left.

All-Star point guard Jason Kidd, who recorded a double-double against the Grizzlies earlier this season, once again efficiently ran Phoenix's offense. He finished with 11 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Kidd's distribution skills also helped the Suns shoot 55 percent (41-of-75).

The Suns also received a boost from the return of rookie forward Shawn Marion, who had missed the last 31 games due to a knee injury. He had 10 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Phoenix never trailed and opened a 20-9 lead with 5:08 to play in the first quarter on a three-point play by Longley. The Suns led by six after one period and held a 52-43 advantage at halftime behind 14 points from Longley.

"We hurt ourselves more than anything else," Abdur-Rahim said. "They came out and jumped on us and we didn't respond. We didn't fight back like we should have."

Mike Bibby added 12 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 33 percent (27-of-82) and were outrebounded, 42-31.
