Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The "Twin Towers" are ready for the All-Star Game.

Sparked by the dominating play of All-Stars David Robinson and Tim Duncan, the San Antonio Spurs built a big early lead en route to a 106-97 victory over the mistake-prone Denver Nuggets.

Robinson finished with 30 points and nine rebounds while Duncan had 24, 13 and eight steals. They each scored 14 points in the opening half to help the Spurs built a 64-41 advantage.

Avery Johnson added 19 points and eight assists for the defending NBA champion Spurs, who head into the All-Star break with a 32-17 record. Last season, San Antonio finished with a 37-13 mark.

Chris Gatling netted 19 points and rookie James Posey had 15 for Denver, which lost its fourth straight game. The Nuggets close out their first half on Thursday at Sacramento.

The Spurs led by as many as 25 points in the first half and were still in front, 66-41, after Robinson made a 16-footer to start the third. San Antonio held a 17-point lead entering the fourth quarter but the Nuggets fought back.

Gatling and Stith scored six points apiece in a 17-5 burst that opened the fourth period and pulled the Nuggets within 93-88 with 4:42 remaining. But that was as close as they would get.

Veteran Terry Porter hit two free throws and followed with a 16-footer to help the Spurs regain control. They led by at least six points thereafter.

"We made a nice comeback. The group that was in there played hard and did a good jobn with their defensive assignments," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "You just can't dig a hole that big against anybody much less San Antonio and still have a chance to win."

San Antonio won for the fourth time in five games despite its bench being badly outplayed. Denver's reserves outscored San Antonio's, 52-22.

"They made some big plays and came alive," Robinson said. "When they cut it under 10 points I was a little concerned. You don't want to get in a position where they are on fire and can win with one basket."

The Nuggets inability to take care of the ball canceled the effort from the bench. They committed a season-high 26 turnovers that San Antonio converted into 30 points. The Spurs had 19 steals.

San Antonio got off to a quick start, opening the contest with a 20-8 run capped by two free throws from Duncan with 5:29 to play in the period. The lead grew to 37-22 after one quarter.

"We were moving around, getting a lot of steals and easy baskets," Duncan said.

Robinson and Duncan combined to make 20-of-39 shots for the Spurs, who shot 43.5 percent (37-of-85).

The combination of Robinson and Duncan provided trouble for Denver center Raef LaFrentz, who finished with just two points and three rebounds.

Antonio McDyess added 14 points and Tariq Abdul-Wahad 13 for Denver, which shot 45 percent (38-of-85) and battled the bigger Spurs to a 45-45 stalemate on the boards.
