Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat are starting to regain their home-court advantage.

Jamal Mashburn scored 26 points and rookie Rodney Buford led an impressive bench effort as the Heat continued their turnaround at home with a 115-100 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

After dropping three of their first five games at American Airlines Arena, the Heat have won their last five contests at home.

Mashburn, who will be counted on heavily in the playoffs, made 10-of-18 shots from the field and also had seven rebounds and seven assists. He scored 16 points in the opening half.

"I'm just playing basketball, focusing in on playing hard, making people better," Mashburn said. "I feel like I have a lot of improvement to do. I want to be consistent and do a lot of things."

Selected with the 53rd pick in the draft, Buford had the best effort of his young career, scoring a season-high 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He led the reserves for the Heat, who outscored Golden State's bench, 51-21.

"It felt good like it was in the college day," said Buford, who play collegiately at Creighton. "I got my confidence real high when I knocked down some of my shots."

Alonzo Mourning added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Heat, who took control with a 17-7 run over the final 6:09 of the third quarter to open an 88-77 lead.

Miami heads into the All-Star break with a 30-17 record and in first place in the Atlantic Division, one game in front of the New York Knicks. In last season's lockout-shortened campaign, the Heat finished with a 33-17 mark.

"We still have a long way to go and things we have to take care of," Mashburn said. "This is just the first of three parts."

Antawn Jamison and Mookie Blaylock netted 17 points apiece for Golden State, which has dropped three straight games following a season-best four-game winning streak.

"It was 51-21 in bench points led by Buford," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "That's what led to our demise. We didn't defend as well as we should have. If you don't match Miami toe-to-toe they will make you pay."

The Warriors were within 71-70 with 6:09 left in the third quarter on an 18-footer by Donyell Marshall, who finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. But following Marshall's basket, the Heat took control.

P.J. Brown had a tip-in and Mourning scored six consecutive points. Rookie Anthony Carter hit two free throws with 20 seconds left in the period for an 88-77 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Brown had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Carter scored 10 points for Miami, which shot 53 percent (48-of-90) and held a 48-35 rebounding advantage.

"Tonight we played very well offensively," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We got a tremendous performance from Mashburn. P.J. Brown played hard, crashing the boards, and in addition we had great energy off the bench, especially Rodney Buford. I felt the bench was the difference in the game."

Miami continued to pull away and took its biggest lead at 100-81 with 9:19 to play on a jumper by Carter. He also handed five assists, once again proving more than capable as point guard Tim Hardaway's backup.

Erick Dampier added 15 points for the Warriors, who shot 44 percent (35-of-78) and trailed by double digits throughout the fourth quarter.

The first half of the season in mercifully over for Golden State, which fired coach P.J. Carlesimo and is just 12-35. The Warriors finished 21-29 last season.
