Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Rookie Corey Maggette scored 15 points to lead a balanced attack and Darrell Armstrong powered a third-quarter surge as the Orlando Magic defeated the Washington Wizards, 107-96, for their fourth straight victory.

Newcomer Ron Mercer and John Amaechi scored 14 points apiece for the Magic, who had six players in double figures. Armstrong added 13, including six in a 16-7 burst that opened the second half and gave Orlando control for good.

The Magic have won eight of 10 since a season-high eight-game losing streak and improved to 24-26 entering the All-Star break. They are only nine wins behind last season's team, which was gutted via trades and free agency during the offseason.

"Those games that we lost, it wasn't like by blowouts," said former Wizard Ben Wallace, who had 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. "We felt like we kind of beat ourselves down the stretch. We knew if we cleaned up a couple of things, a turnover here, maybe a rebound or loose ball here, that we could have won those games. I think everybody stayed confident."

"That feels good, it really does," Armstrong said. "We worked our way back into contention in the playoffs. I tell you what, a lot of people prrobably counted us out when we lost seven in a row, eight in a row and it was looking really slim. But we worked our way back up."

Juwan Howard scored 20 points for the lackluster Wizards (15-34), who have lost six straight visits to Orlando and fell to 1-4 under interim coach Darrell Walker.

"They just pushed and pushed and pushed," Walker said. "They are in great shape. You can do that when you are in great shape. They are young and in great shape. They are in prime shape and can do that. Unfortunately, we have to work on that."

The Magic led 53-52 at halftime and got off to a quick start in the third quarter. Armstrong made a pair of jumpers around a basket by Amaechi before Mercer's layup with 7:25 remaining gave Orlando a 69-59 lead with 7:25 left in the period.

Orlando shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the floor while holding Washington to 35 percent (7-of-20). The Magic took an 86-72 lead into the fourth quarter and opened their largest margin at 98-77 with 8:13 to play on a 3-pointer by Pat Garrity, who scored nine points. Washington got no closer than the final margin.

Chucky Atkins had 11 points and nine assists for the Magic, who shot 49.5 percent (48-of-97) and committed just eight turnovers. They survived a 10-of-20 performance from the line.

Mitch Richmond scored 14 points and Jahidi White added 12 and a career-high 16 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 47 percent (35-of-74) but committed 19 turnovers.

"They play within their means," said former Magic center Isaac Austin, who scored six points. "Of course, Doc (Magic coach Doc Rivers) works them hard and he is a good coach. He is getting the most potential out of his team right now."

Amaechi scored 10 points in the first quarter as Orlando raced to a 32-27 lead. The Magic stopped their pressure defense late in the second quarter and Washington closed within one point at intermission.

"I told them not to trap and basically what it did was make them extremely passive," Rivers said. "That was a coaching mistake for me."
