Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Dickerson scored a career-high 40 points as the Vancouver Grizzlies set a franchise record for road wins in a season with a 112-90 romp over the undermanned Los Angeles Clippers.

Dickerson's outburst shattered his previous high of 31 points set against Minnesota on May 4, 1999 and fell one short of the franchise record of 41 set by Bryant Reeves against Boston on January 15, 1998.

"I just thank my teammates for getting me the ball in the right situations," a gracious Dickerson said. "I was just playing my regular game, going along into the fourth quarter. I didn't know how many points I had, but I knew I hit a lot of shots. It's my most points since high school."

The win was the Grizzlies seventh on the road this season, surpassing their total for the 1996-97 campaign, when they finished 6-35.

For the Clippers, the loss literally added insult to injury. Los Angeles, which has dropped six straight and 16 of its last 17, has been hit hard by the injury bug and dressed only eight players. Maurice Taylor was out with a sprained right hand and Brian Skinner was sidelined with a sprained right ankle. Eric Murdock (sprained left ankle) and Tyrone Nesby (broken right toe) were also unavailable.

"We had only eight guys out there tonight," said Clippers coach Jim Todd, who fell to 0-4 as interim coach. "We were afraid of having a letdown. We started out fairly well but just ran out of gas."

The Clippers only win during this woeful stretch came against the New Jersey Nets on January 29.

Vancouver broke open the game in the third quarter, using a 12-2 run to take a 75-54 lead with 1:54 left. Derek Anderson, who had 29 points, scored the final six points of the period and opened the fourth with a basket to cut the deficit to 75-62, but the Clippers could get no closer. Los Angeles fell into a tie with Chicago for the worst record in the NBA.

Rookie Lamar Odom continued his rough stretch, scoring only four points with five assists in 20 minutes.

"He's just young and gets frustrated easily," Todd said. "It takes time before you get a reputation and get calls. We are asking him to do a lot out there."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 22 points on 11-of-14 shooting and added eight rebounds as the Grizzlies defeated Los Angeles for the third time in four meetings this season. Vancouver has won eight of its last 10 against the Clippers.

"It's nice to have this win and I want to build to having the same work ethic in the second half," said Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins, who earned his first NBA coaching victory earlier this season against the Clippers.

Dickerson had 11 points in the opening quarter as Vancouver took a 24-19 lead. He added 13 points in the second quarter, including five during a 13-4 run which gave the Grizzlies a 51-39 halftime lead.

Vancouver took its biggest lead, 102-78, on a 3-pointer by Dickerson with 2:26 to play.

Mike Bibby scored 14 points and Felipe Lopez added 10 off the bench for the Grizzlies, who shot 54 percent (44-of-82) from the floor and held a 40-35 rebounding edge.

Michael Olowokandi collected 14 points, Charles Jones added 13 off the bench and Troy Hudson finished with 12 for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (36-of-83) and surrendered 31 points off 20 turnovers.
