Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- If the San Antonio Spurs are going to make a run for another title, this is not the way they wanted to start the second half of the season.

Lamond Murray scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers earned a 92-81 victory over the Spurs, whose struggles on the road continued.

San Antonio lost for the fifth time in its last seven road contests and fell to just 12-14 away from home. En route to the first championship in club history last year, the Spurs went 16-9 on the road in the regular season and 8-1 in the playoffs.

"It was the worst exhibition of basketball ever that I've seen by any team all season," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I don't know what else I can tell you."

Rookie Andre Miller added 20 points and seven assists for the Cavs, who took control of the contest with a 10-2 run that ended the third quarter and provided a 70-61 lead. They led by at least seven points thereafter.

"We played their game tonight and showed we can win," said Miller, who made 8-of-15 shots from the field. "We played hard tonight and that's the way we need to play every night."

Cleveland, which stopped a four-game losing streak, again was without starting shooting guard Bob Sura, who missed his fourth straight game with a sprained toe.

"This was as good an effort as we've had all year," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "We followed our game plan to a `T' and were focused. This needs to be a springboard for our guys to realize we have to be like this for every game. We have to learn from the past and move on. I'm thrilled to death with our game tonight."

All-Stars Tim Duncan and David Robinson led the way for San Antonio. Duncan scored 21 points while Robinson had 20 and 11 rebounds before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

The Cavs led by one late in third quarter before Danny Ferry sank a jumper with 1:56 left to trigger the decisive run.

Miller followed Ferry's basket with four straight points and, after Duncan hit a jumper, Wesley Person and Murray had baskets to end the period.

Murray made 10-of-21 shots for the Cavs, who shot 42 percent (34-of-81) and outrebounded the bigger Spurs, 43-35. Cleveland also forced the Spurs into 19 turnovers.

"This is very important for us. We need to try to get a win streak going," Murray said. "If we lose Thursday to Denver, this win means nothing."

San Antonio, which struggled for most of contest, closed to 83-76 with 4:23 remaining on a jumper by Robinson. But Murray hit a pair of free throws and Miller answered with a 3-pointer for 12-point bulge with 3:35 to play.

Robinson and Duncan were the only players to score in double figures for the Spurs, who shot 39 percent (29-of-75).

"It was a very bad night. We had a little rust and could never get back in the game," said Duncan, who had just five rebounds. "We missed easy shots and it's the simple stuff we're messing up on."

Duncan and Robinson scored 10 points apiece in the opening half, helping the Spurs to a 46-43 lead.
