Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat entered the United Center licking their chops at the prospect of playing the undermanned Chicago Bulls. They left licking their wounds.

Rookie Elton Brand scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading the Bulls to an unlikely 83-76 victory over the Heat. The conference's worst team beat the Atlantic Division leaders despite having only 10 players due to the trade of Toni Kukoc.

Kukoc, the last remaining major link to the Bulls' dynasty, was traded on Wednesday as part of a three-way deal involving the Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors.

Kukoc went to Philadelphia, which sent guard Larry Hughes and forward Billy Owens to Golden State, which then dealt guard John Starks and a conditional No. 1 pick to Chicago. The Bulls also received swingman Bruce Bowen from the Sixers. Starks and Bowen are not expected to join the Bulls until Friday.

"This was a real big win for us for many reasons, including the mental health of our team," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "With Toni gone, we needed to show we could win without him, especially against a team like Miami. That made it much more special."

"This win feels good," Brand said. "The trade was a distraction, but we put it behind us. Without Toni, we thought it would be tough to get 80 points, but hey, we got 83."

The loss was among the most embarrassing of the season for the Heat, who lost for the second straight time to the Bulls. Chicago rallied from a 10-point deficit to earn a stunning 92-85 overtime victory at American Airlines Arena on January 18.

The Heat were held to their second-lowest output of the season, barely surpassing a 74-72 win against Utah on December 22. The loss was Miami's fourth against teams with a winning percentage below .300.

"We played hard, but lousy," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "Tonight we took some bad shots out of double-teams and made bad decisions. I thought everyone was into their game and their shots. They were not making the plays that were there."

Chris Carr, who scored a season-high 18 points, ignited a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer and Hersey Hawkins capped the spurt with two 3-pointers, giving Chicago a commanding 70-59 lead with 5:23 to play.

Alonzo Mourning had 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks for Miami, which dropped to 6-9 against Central Division opponents, including 1-6 on the road.

"Our defense was outstanding," Floyd added. "That is an identity we want to lock in. We limited their post-up game and did a good job on (Alonzo) Mourning."

"I'm not giving them any credit," a disappointed Mourning said. "I'm very upset with our performance. We're a better team than they are, we just haven't shown it. It's just amazing -- we're a very inconsistent team. Our lack of execution, rebounding and being late in situations can't go on."

Miami took a 47-42 lead on a 3-pointer by Tim Hardaway at the 6:43 mark of the third quarter. But Carr hit a 15-footer and two free throws and answered a jumper by Jamal Mashburn with another basket, cutting the deficit to 49-48 with 3:23 left. Brand followed with a three-point play to put the Bulls ahead for good.

Hardaway finished with 14 points and nine assists for Miami, which shot 41 percent (32-of-79) from the field and were outrebounded, 47-40.

Hawkins made 4-of-5 shots from behind the arc, scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Bulls, who shot only 36 percent (27-of-75) but made 22-of-27 free throws compared to 6-of-11 for Miami.

"Hersey Hawkins was outstanding," Floyd said. "He hit some key baskets down the stretch, including when Elton passed out of the double-team."

"Everyone performed tonight, especially on defense," Hawkins said. "It was a huge win. It does a lot for our confidence. Our confidence level wasn't real great this morning, especially with Toni there saying his goodbyes. Coach Floyd told us to go out and play like professionals and that is what we did tonight."
