Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine assists as the Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a four-game losing streak and continued their dominance of the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 103-91 victory.

Terrell Brandon had 21 points and Malik Sealy added 18 for Minnesota, which outscored Vancouver, 41-20, in the second quarter and led by as many as 25. The Timberwolves improved to 10-0 all-time against the Grizzlies at the Target Center and 16-3 overall.

Michael Dickerson scored 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting and Mike Bibby added 18 for Vancouver, which committed 20 turnovers and lost for the third time in five games.

Vancouver led 25-21 after the first quarter, and opened a 34-27 cushion on a basket by Othella Harrington with 9:31 left in the second quarter.

Two free throws by Bibby enabled the Grizzlies to grab a 36-31 lead with 8:27 left in the second quarter. But Garnett and Anthony Peeler led a 31-9 run to close the half and Minnesota never trailed thereafter. Garnett had eight points and Peeler added seven, including a 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining, as the Timberwolves built a 62-45 halftime lead.

"I thought the second quarter defensively we were outstanding, about as good as we have been in a long time," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We really contested a lot of shots, really got out quickly. We played good team basketball."

Garnett had 11 points in the second quarter, when the Timberwolves shot 80 percent (16-of-20) and scored 14 points off nine turnovers. The 41-point second quarter was a season high.

"We lost our composure for awhile in the second quarter," Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins said. "We actually outscored them for three quarters, but that second quarter killed us."

Minnesota took a 84-63 lead into the final period and grabbed its largest advantage at 96-71 on two free throws by rookie Wally Szczerbiak with 7:42 to play. The Grizzlies closed with a 9-0 run to make the score respectable.

The Timberwolves' bench outscored Vancouver's reserves, 43-11, as Szczerbiak netted 14 points, Joe Smith 12 and Peeler 11.

Minnesota lost starting forward Sam Mitchell in the first quarter with a sprained left ankle sprain. He did not return.

Overall, the Timberwolves shot 51 percent (40-of-78) from the field, sank 19-of-21 free throws and dished out 33 assists.

"We played better, moved the ball better, shot better. We took good shots," Saunders said. "That's how we have to play, no matter who we are playing. If we don't play that way, we can't beat Vancouver, we can't beat Denver, we can't beat the Lakers, we can't beat San Antonio. If we play that way, we can beat anybody."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points and Bryant Reeves added 12 for Vancouver, which shot under 47 percent (35-of-75).
