Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- And the Miami Heat are a first-place team.

Stephon Marbury scored half of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the New Jersey Nets handed the Heat their second disappointing loss in as many nights, 91-84.

Coming off Thursday's 83-76 defeat at Chicago, the Heat found themselves in another battle against one of the league's lower echelon teams.

Miami has a half-game lead over idle New York in the Atlantic Division but are a combined 1-4 against the Nets and Chicago.

Marbury hit two free throws with 3:47 to play following a flagrant foul by Anthony Carter that put the Nets ahead, 80-77. Tim Hardaway answered with a 3-pointer to tie it before Marbury made two more foul shots to put New Jersey ahead for good with 3:28 remaining.

"It was a tough game for us tonight," Marbury said. "We showed a lot of heart and character. And I think with us losing games, tonight was definitely a game we had to get, especially being up early."

Hardaway netted 18 points for the Heat, who have dropped six of their last seven on the road, where they have split 26 games this season.

New Jersey won for the first time in eight tries on Friday this season.

Trailing 70-63 entering the final period, the Heat opened the period on a 10-2 run, capped by a dunk by Alonzo Mourning that put them in front with 9:43 to play.

Working primarily against overmatched Jim McIlvaine in the middle, Mourning finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds but found himself in foul trouble for a good portion of the contest. He made 6-of-15 shots from the floor.

"Regardless of who we're playing, we've got to play better than we did," Mourning said. "Everyone in here knows we are a better team then they are. We just didn't display that tonight. Chicago and these guys have both beaten good teams this year. If you don't come prepared on the road, you could be beaten in this league."

Keith Van Horn added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Kendall Gill had 18 points for New Jersey, which won despite shooting 39 percent (31-of-80) and being outrebounded, 51-35.

"The key for us was to hold Alonzo down and let the other players beat you," Gill said. "Alonzo came alive at the end of the game a little bit. If Miami is going to beat you, let Carter (Voshon) Lenard, (Mark) Strickland and P.J. Brown beat you. Don't let Tim and Alonzo beat you. That's what we tried to do."

Voshon Lenard added 15 points and Jamal Mashburn had 12 and 11 rebounds for Miami, which shot 47 percent (35-of-74) but committed 24 turnovers that the Nets converted into 22 points.

"It's a disappointing loss. Right now our offense is stuck in mud," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "The turnovers are the difference. We were careless with the ball and tentative. We need to find an offense inside our offense that we can execute."

The Heat led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter. But they committed 15 turnovers in the half as the Nets came back to take a 50-41 lead at intermission.
